    • An electro-magnetic coupling apparatus for use with a tug and barge tow includes a bumper frame which is pivotally carried by the tub. The bumper frame includes a bearing surface that is positioned to bear against the barge so that a load transfer between the tub and the barge occurs at the bearing surface. A magnetic coupling preferably in the form of a plurality of coil members is carried at the load transfer surface for developing a magnetic field which can form a connection between the barge and the tug. An electrical power source is carried by the tub for energizing the magnetic field and a powered guide comprising a powered sheave and a pair of lines extending from the sheave to the barge defines a steering mechanism for angling the bumper frame and tug with respect to each other when maneuvering to each barge while making up a tow of several barges, for example.

    • The specification describes a tow bar assembly for coupling an auxiliary watercraft to the stern of a larger towing craft. The tow bar assembly comprises a socket member especially designed for attachment to the swim platform of the towing craft when one is provided or, alternatively, directly to the transom of the towing craft. The socket is designed to receive one end of a generally longitudinally incompressible but vertically flexible bar member. The other end of the bar member is provided with a suitable coupling device for facilitating connection to the bow of the craft to be towed.

    • Disclosed is a device for fastening two hulls to each other, one of the hulls usually being a motor hull and the other a cargo hull. The device includes a first pair of booms (1,2) extending essentially parallel to each other between the hulls (5,6) and at least one further boom, preferably one further pair of booms (3,4) extending, as seen from one side, crosswise in relation to the first pair of booms (1,2) so that all the booms (1,2; 3,4), seen from the side, constitute the diagonals of a quadrangle determined by the fastening points of the booms. Preferably, the booms are fastened to the hulls by means of transversal bars (8,9) mounted pivotably in horizontal planes on the hulls. At least two of the booms are preferably adjustable as to their length.

    • A system for deploying and retrieving a seismic source assembly from a marine seismic vessel. The system comprises a guide track which is secured to the underside of an upper deck of the vessel. The chain which absorbs most of the strain due to towing passes through the track and is safely confined therein during the deployment and retrieval of the source assembly. A connector is attached to the chain at each point where a seismic source and a buoy line is to be attached. As the chain is unreeled and as each connector approaches the track, a source and a buoy line is attached to that respective connector. The track is constructed so a connector on the chain with both a source and a buoy line attached can pass therethrough. This procedure is continued until the seismic source assembly is deployed. The procedure is reversed to retrieve the source assembly.

    • A novel compound drum hoist is provided herein. It includes a first or outer cable-spooling drum rotatably and drivingly mounted on a first shaft. A second or inner cable-spooling drum is nested within the first drum, and is rotatably and drivingly mounted on a second shaft disposed at an angle of 90.degree..+-.30.degree., but preferably at a right angle to the first shaft. The inner drum is operable to be rotated while the outer drum is maintained stationary, thereby to spool faired cable onto the inner drum. Substantially simultaneously the outer drum is rotated along with the inner drum, thereby to spool faired cable onto the outer drum. Such hoist is thus suitably adapted to wind long lengths of cable with segmented fairings thereon without any significant risk of crushing the fairings.

    • An improved system for coupling together two objects, particularly sea-going vessels, while permitting relative and at least limited movement in at least three axes -- roll, pitch and yaw -- with a one or more vertical elements mounted on the stern of one towing vessel each coupled to a horizontal element mounted on the bow of a second towed vessel to permit formation of a sea-going barge train pulled by a tug. The horizontal element includes a fluid-tight housing which is mounted for limited lateral movement and which defines an internal chamber in which a piston member and an attached rod move. The rod extends outboard to connect to the vertical element and specifically to one of a pair of concentric vertical members, the other of which is fixedly mounted on the towing vessel. The vertical members move slidably in a vertical direction with respect to each other. The piston of the horizontal element divides the chamber into first and second sub-chambers which are coupled to pneumatic or hydraulic sources which supply fluid or gas to damp piston movement and/or aid in steering. A lateral damping member may be connected to each housing of the horizontal element, particularly when only two couplers are mounted on opposite sides of the vessels. A rigid center coupler flanked by the two piston couplers can be used on larger barges in place of the two side couplers, and also effectively minimizes lateral movement.
