    • A vehicle arranged for raising and lowering the frame relative to the ground wheels for loading comprises a vehicle frame with a hitch at a forward end of the frame and at least two ground wheels for supporting the frame for movement across the ground. Each wheel has a mounting assembly providing driven rotation of a hub carrying the wheel spindle from a raised height of the wheel to a lower locked position. The hub is driven by a hydraulic motor driving a pinion. A fender is mounted on the vehicle frame for covering the wheel during transport, the fender including two interlocking portions thereof which are spring mounted so as to be movable relative to the wheel to accommodate the movement of the wheel to the raised position. The frame has a rear portion which is movable rearwardly to adjust the position of the load and the rear portion of the fender can be attached to the rear frame portion so as to be moved away from the wheel with movement thereof.

    • A sectional van trailer having detachable, interchangeable compartments capable of forming a continuous van body is disclosed. One or more van sections or cargo compartments are secured to a trailer frame. The van sections may be individually removed and left at a location for loading or unloading. When removed, the van sections form secure, weather-tight individual containers for the goods disposed therein. The van sections are interconnected and each van section may remain an individual compartment or may be joined with one or more adjacent van sections to form a continuous van body. A tractor mounted hoist apparatus is provided to allow a lone truck operator to move the van sections between the ground, and the trailer frame, a storage stand, or a truck frame. The described embodiments are particularly efficient for moving both household belongings and general commodities on a long-haul trip. Moreover, since the individual van sections may be removed from a trailer, stored, and resecured to a different trailer frame, it is possible to transport the loaded van sections to a hub terminal and then transfer the van sections to outgoing trailers heading for points along the way to a final destination. Use of the present invention allows much more efficient transportation of goods by truck since loads may be planned to allow a direct, rather than circuitous, route to a final destination. Also disclosed is a system for removably constructing shelf decks and partition walls within the cargo compartment or other cargo holding section.

    • A chassis with a telescoping articulated stinger for receiving and hauling containers over 40 feet is disclosed where the chassis rear tandem wheels assist in steering. The chassis mounts conventionally and pivotally at a fifth wheel to a towing tractor with a forward bolster for supporting the forward end of a container. The chassis has a telescoping stinger connecting the rear set of tandem wheels with overlying rear bolster for conventionally supporting and towing short cargo containers, preferably of 20 to 40 feet in length. Where a container of greater than 40 feet is desired to be hauled on the chassis, the stinger is telescoped to expose an articulating joint and both bolsters are allowed to pivot with respect to the chassis. The towing tractor is locked to the chassis at the fifth wheel, and the articulated stinger adjusted in length for the desired lever arm to permit optimum tandem wheel steering. Upon encountering a corner, the stinger articulates and telescopes relative to the hauled and towed container to steer the tandem wheel set to assist overlong container loads of more than 40 feet in negotiating turns.
