    • A motion mechanism in a type printer, wherein the axial displacement of a type drum relative to a printing hammer for setting the required type in position opposite the hammer, and the axial movement of both hammer and type drum for obtaining a new printing position on the sheet, is effected by means of a cord system which consists of a single cord, a type of endless chain. The cord runs over pulleys arranged at each end of the line to be printed, such that the cord is divided into four cord parts extending substantially parallel to the line on the sheet, one cord part supporting the hammer, and one supporting the type drum. At one side, two pulleys are arranged in spaced relationship on a plate which is mounted pivotally about an axis lying intermediate the rotational axes for the two pulleys. Furthermore the cord co-operates with a driving motor operating on that part of the cord which leads to the hammer. Setting of the hammer to a new printing position on the sheet is then effected by displacing the whole cord in its length direcion by means of the driving motor, whereby the hammer and the type drum will move equal distances. Setting of the type drum to a posion with a new type opposite the hammer is made by pivoting the mounting plate for the pulleys, whereby the type drum only is moved, while the hammer is held fixed.

    • A character supporting type shell for use with a character-bycharacter printer is disclosed. The shell is constructed of a material and has a shape that cause it to have rotational and longitudinal rigidity when rotated and longitudinally reciprocated about and along an axis, respectively. In addition, the shell has radial resilience so that it is deformable when acted upon by a force in an appropriate direction and of an appropriate magnitude. The resultant structure is one which has a weight considerably less than prior art devices and also a reduced inertia. The last-named factors contribute characteristics which permit a greater printing rate than previously available.

    • Selectors for a printing machine having a plurality of typecarrying wheels mounted in a printing carriage. A transversing selector selects a particular type wheel out of all the type wheels and a rotary selector selects a particular type out of all the types carried by the selected type wheel. These two selectors comprise a toothed rack, means for imparting to said rack a reciprocating movement, a plurality of pinions toothed around two opposite sectors and untoothed around two sectors interlaced with the previous sectors and engaging with said rack except when one untoothed sector is opposite the rack, a plurality of two arm levers pivotally mounted respectively on said pinions and terminated by a toothed-shaped extension at both ends of the arms thereof, a plurality of projections along the rack selectively cooperating with the lever teeth, a plurality of electromagnets respectively associated with said levers, means for selectively placing one of the teeth of the levers on to the path of the rack projections and for selectively allowing the pinions to rotate a half turn and means for converting the discrete rotation angles of the pinions of the rotary selector into a digitalized angular movement for positioning the type-carrying wheels and the discrete rotation angles of the traversing selector into a digitalized rectilinear movement for positioning the printing carriage.
