    • There is described a method of removing excess lens forming material from a molded ophthalmic lens (1), such as the peripheral region of a contact lens. In order to form a lens (1) a lens forming material is polymerized and/or cross-linked within a mold cavity of a mold comprising female and male mold halves. The mold is opened by moving the female and male mold halves apart from each other. The formed lens (1) is supported on a carrier (3) such, that a front surface (2) of the lens (1) is exposed. Residues of non-polymerized and/or non-cross-linked lens forming material are removed mechanically by contacting the exposed surface (2) of the formed lens (1) for a period of time of about 0.5 seconds to about 4 seconds, preferably about 0.8 seconds to about 2 seconds, with a cleaner (7) having a hardness which is smaller than that of the polymerized and/or cross-linked lens forming material. There is also described a device (5) for carrying out the method.

    • The present invention is directed to a process for producing a powder free natural latex article and the articles produced by the process. In one embodiment, the process of the present invention may be used to form a powder free natural latex glove which has very low levels of extractable protein without being subjected to a halogenation processes. The process includes forming a natural rubber article on a former and then, either before or after stripping the article from the former, contacting the article with a rinse solution comprising the ionic species of a disassociated metal salt. In one embodiment, the metal salt may be sodium chloride. Contact with the rinse solution may lower protein levels in the latex. When the article is stripped from the former prior to contact with the rinse solution, the rinse solution may also remove any residual powders from the glove in order to produce a powder free natural rubber article. The non-chlorinated product may have good gripping characteristics and an extended shelf life when compared to similar chlorinated products.

    • An apparatus and method for hydrating is provided for hydrating a lens and extracting residual materials from the lens. The apparatus includes a shaft; multiple arms extending radially from a lower end of the shaft about a central axis in a star-shaped pattern, each arm including a fin extending therebelow such that multiple fins also extend radially with respect to said central axis, wherein the fins including lower outer edges that converge and form a nozzle face. A fluid transport passage extends through the shaft and terminates at an opening in the nozzle face, whereby fluid can be evacuated from the lens through this passage. Preferably, at least one recessed channel is formed in the nozzle face where the fins converge, wherein each of these channels extends from the opening in the nozzle face that forms a terminus of the fluid transport passage to a space between two adjacent fins. The lower outer edges of the fins have an arcuate surface, the arcuate surfaces forming a convex-shaped nozzle face. Preferably, the outer tips of the arms extend radially from the central axis of the apparatus further than the fins extend.
