    • A thread mill that is to be moved along a helical interpolation path while being rotated about an axis of the thread mill in a rotating direction, for forming a thread in a circumferential surface of a workpiece. The thread mill includes a cylindrical main body having (a) at least one spiral flute formed in an outer circumferential surface of the cylindrical main body, and (b) at least one cutting edge each provided by a rear-side one of widthwise opposite edges, as viewed in the rotating direction, of a corresponding one of the at least one spiral flute. Each of the at least one spiral flute extends in a direction opposite to the rotating direction as viewed in a direction away from a proximal end of the cylindrical main body toward a distal end of the cylindrical main body. Also disclosed is a method of forming the thread by using the thread mill.

    • A milling tool 8 includes a tool holder 10 for housing multiple thread cutting inserts 24 for precise milling of threads on a workpiece. The tool holder 10 is rotatable in an orbitable path spaced radially from a milling axis and is simultaneously rotatable about its own axis for repeatedly bringing each of the cutting inserts into engagement with the workpiece. Each cutting insert is precisely positioned within the tool holder by a stop surface 62 located at an axially rearward end of an insert cavity 28 in the tool holder. An axially elongate tool holder groove 32 is provided in communication with a side face of the generally rectilinear insert cavity. Each cutting insert defines a substantially rectangular plate, an end face for mating engagement with the stop surface 62 and an axially elongate insert groove 26 extending from a corresponding side face on the rectangular plate. A plurality of elongate pins 30 are each insertably engaged within each respective tool holder groove and insert groove, and are each secured by a plurality of screws 34 and 35 for applying a uniform force through the axis of the elongate pin for securing the respective cutting insert into a precise stabilized position within the tool holder.

    • A thread-cutting tool comprises a shank 10 for attachment to the spindle of a milling machine, the forward end portion of which shank is formed with a flat 12 recessed to provide a pocket for a flat cutting insert 11. The insert, which is triangular in this instance, has one edge formed with a line of threadform teeth of identical profile. The teeth project laterally for cutting engagement with a work-piece. The surface of the work-piece which is to be formed with a thread is mounted on a fixed work-table of the machine. The tool is rotated about the spindle axis and is simultaneously moved by the spindle in a path centered on the axis of the surface of the work-piece to bring the teeth of the insert into engagement with the surface and the spindle and tool are moved axially continuously by a distance equal to one thread pitch for each revolution of the tool in the circular path, so in one revolution of the tool in the path a number of complete turns of the screw-thread are formed equal to the number of teeth of the insert in engagement with the work-piece.
