    • The golf club head evaluation system provides two methods for evaluating and comparing various club head designs. Method one is a data acquisition apparatus that captures, processes, and displays the bending and torsional deflections and accelerations of a golf club shaft in response to impact loads applied to an attached golf club head. Method two provides a graphical method for comparing the inertia properties of golf club heads based upon equivalent inertia ellipsoids. The apparatus contains an instrumented shaft that is supported in a cantilevered position. Golf club heads of various configurations are attached to the end of the shaft. Their graphical images and mass properties are input to the computer. From the mass property data, an ellipsoid is created with equivalent mass properties. The club head graphical images are presented to the user with superimposed equivalent inertia ellipsoids that facilitate direct comparison of mass properties among different club heads, and for determining desired impact locations. Magnitude and location variable impact loads are applied to the club head by a falling steel ball. The shaft is attached to a rigid steel frame and instrumented with strain gauges configured in a Wheatstone half-bridge arrangement, and with a three-axis accelerometer. The data acquisition system is triggered by the falling ball passing through a light beam. A strain gauge data acquisition board in a central processing unit records strain information. An oscilloscope records data from the accelerometer. A set of computer programs collect strain gauge and accelerometer readings from the shaft, processes and stores the data, and plots the data on a computer screen. Plots include impact induced deflections and accelerations for central and eccentric impact loads, measured in different angular and linear directions. From the experimental data and the equivalent inertia ellipsoids, and the relative merits of various club head designs can be determined and compared.

    • An electronic golf swing analyzing system that uses an array of infrared (IR) and ultrasonic (U/S) sensors, activated by an embedded micro-controller, to capture swing data to accurately calculate the club head's velocity, face angle, and swing path at impact. The system also includes a golf swing analyzing software application that receives the data from the analyzer to determine the distance and direction that the ball will travel relative to the target line. During use, the IR sensor base is placed horizontally and the U/S sensor base is positioned vertically. The player selects one of three available practice modes, which determines how the trajectory data for each swing is visually displayed. The player selects a golf club, enters golf ball information, and environmental conditions information. Trajectory results for each swing are graphically displayed relative to the players stated ability level on the computer monitor.

    • A golf instructional apparatus designed to teach a golfer to hit the ball straight and to correct a golfer's hook or slice. The apparatus is also capable of teaching a golfer how to hit a hook or slice. A golf mat is located in a designated ball hitting area having a reference line. A flexible cylinder is located forwardly and outside the ball striking area, which the golfer may hit on the through swing if the club is incorrectly swung. A flexible panel is suspended facing the golfer and will be struck by an incorrect over-the-top swing. The flexible panel allows the golfer to practice at full speed as there are no obstructions in the ball hitting area. The apparatus can be used with or without a ball as immediate feedback is provided. The panel has an indicator mark placed on it forward of the golfer which the golfer attempts to hit when learning draws, hooks or to help change the golfer's slice pattern. A sensor is positioned forward and rearward the hitting area. If the golfer takes the club back correctly, a signal will be given and if incorrectly taken back, no signal. The same is true with the follow through swing.

    • The disclosed apparatus electronically times and records a moving object as it travels over a measured course. The apparatus is especially useful in recording and timing an athlete running over a measured course in order to determine the overall athletic prowess of the athlete. The apparatus provides more accurate and uniform testing of an athlete's ability to run a predetermined distance as fast as possible. The apparatus includes a plurality of ultrasonic detectors positioned in predetermined spaced relationship along a course over which an athlete runs (object moves). A sequence of RF detection signals are sent to a timing circuit which computes the elapsed times of the athlete (object) over the course. The times are recorded along with video information produced by a video camera. When the timing information and recorded scene are played back on a video monitor, the timing information is displayed along with the video image to facilitate analysis of the recorded event.
