    • A system for performing surgery on a patient's eye includes a handpiece constructed for insertion into the eye, a control module, and a foot pedal module. The control module includes at least one control arranged for setting at least one parameter of operation of the handpiece (e.g., aspiration rate, intensity of phaco-power, etc.). The foot pedal module includes a foot pedal with which operation of the handpiece is controllable in accordance with the parameter set by the control in the control module. For example, the foot pedal may be used to vary the aspiration rate or the intensity of phaco-power up to the maximum set by a control on the control module. The foot pedal module includes circuitry for controlling operation of the handpiece in response to depression of the foot pedal and in accordance with the parameter set by the control in the control module. That is, processing circuitry is located in the foot pedal module rather than the control module, which enables the control module to be relatively compact.

    • An improved medical tool which combines tumescent anesthetic solution with lipoplastic. Using a peristaltic pump and a cannula, the surgeon directs the tumescent solution into the area of concern. The tumescent solution provides both a local anesthetic as well as a vasoconstrictor. The solution eliminates the need for a general anesthetic, thus eliminating problems associated therewith, and the solution causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the amount of blood loss during the procedure. Once the solution has had an opportunity to perform its function, the surgeon reverses the direction of the peristaltic pump and removes the fat and tissue through the same cannula used for the tumescent portion of the operation. Since the suction process is performed by the peristaltic pump (as opposed to manually by the surgeon), the cannula is reduced in size to a highly versatile and tactile instrument providing highly improved results.

    • High viscosity materials are dispensed or aspirated by an assembly of cartridges having plungers reciprocally mounted within them. A device for translating rotary motion into linear motion is connected to the output shaft of a small electric motor so that operation of the motor effects linear movement of the plungers. The assembly replaces hydraulic and pneumatic systems and enables better control of the dispensing or aspirating process. In a first embodiment, a single cartridge dispenses a high viscosity material. In additional embodiments, plural cartridges are employed. In the final embodiments, the apparatus is equipped with a suitable assembly of one-way valves and other auxiliary equipment so that it can be used to perform liposuction or aspiration procedures and irrigation of surgical sites.

    • The aspiration system with positive pressure includes a fluid flow network having a vacuum source at one end and a suction instrument at another end. Suction is regulated by a control valve that can be actuated by a foot pedal. Suction communication between the vacuum source and the suction instrument can be prevented by placing the control valve in the closed position. A positive pressure input device is included in the fluid flow network and is also actuatable by the foot pedal to provide an impulse of positive pressure at the suction instrument. The positive pressure impulse is provided when the aspiration process is being hindered by blockage of the suction inlet end of the suction instrument. A puff of positive pressure is used to expel material from the suction inlet end of the suction instrument. The use of a positive pressure impulse at the suction end of a suction instrument is also applicable to release material transported by the suction instrument from one location to another.

    • An assembly for use in drainage of an abscess comprises an outer tubular member provided in a distal end portion with a plurality of longitudinal slits. The distal end portion of the tubular member has a spring bias tending to form the distal end portion into a substantially spherical expanded configuration to anchor the distal end portion of the tubular member in an abscess. An inner tubular member or obturator is inserted into the outer tubular member and has a distal end provided with a cutting edge projecting from the outer tubular member. Locking components on the obturator and the outer tubular member serve to maintain the latter in a stretched out cylindrical configuration enabling insertion of the distal end portion into an abscess.
