    • A surgical stapling instrument for forming and implanting surgical staples in the tissue of a patient to close a wound or incision therein. The instrument comprises a body. A row of staples is mounted within the body. A feeder assembly is provided to constantly urge the row of staples forwardly, to locate the forwardmost staple thereof in position to be formed. A pair of staple formers are pivotally mounted on the body and are rotatable between normal retracted positions and staple forming positions wherein they form the forwardmost staple of the row and implant the staple in the tissue of the patient. A pair of levers are pivotally affixed to the body of the surgical stapling instrument to shift the formers to their forming positions and a resilient member is provided to bias the formers to their normal retracted positions.

    • A latch assembly to lock in closed position the front gate of the guide body of an industrial fastener driving tool of the type wherein the guide body and the front gate (in closed position) define a part of a drive track for the tool driver and fasteners. The gate has a first free end and a second end pivotally affixed by a pivot pin to the guide body and is swingable between a closed position against the guide body and an open position. The latch comprises a leaf spring overlying the gate and having a first free end and a second end pivotally affixed to the guide by the same pivot pin as the gate. The leaf spring has first and second angularly related portions so as to bow outwardly of the gate. A latch pin is mounted transversely on the leaf spring along the juncture of its first and second portions with the ends of the latch pin extending beyond the leaf spring. A U-shaped latch lever is provided having a base portion to be manually grasped and hook-shaped legs terminating in free ends pivotally affixed to the guide body to either side of the gate and the leaf spring. The latch lever is pivotable between an open position and a closed position wherein the legs thereof engage the latch pin ends with an over-center action, urging the leaf spring against the gate and locking the gate in its closed position.

    • A front gate and gate latch assembly for the guide body of an industrial fastener driving tool of the type wherein the guide body and front gate, in closed position, define a drive track for the tool driver and fasteners. The gate is pivotally affixed to the guide body and is swingable between a closed position against the guide body and an open position. A latch plate having tapered end portions is slidably and captively mounted on the gate. A spaced pair of locking blocks are mounted on the guide body to either side of the gate. The latch plate is shiftable along the gate between a gate locking position wherein the latch plate ends are in wedged engagement with the locking blocks and a gate release position free of the locking blocks. The latch plate is shiftable by a manually actuable over-center locking lever assembly.

    • A disposable surgical stapling instrument for the joining together of tubular body organs such as the organs of the alimentary canal. The instrument comprises an elongated body having a tubular housing portion and a coaxial cylindrical handle portion. The tubular housing portion supports at its free end a coaxial cylindrical casing containing at least one annular array of surgical staples. An adjusting rod is coaxially and non-rotatively mounted within the instrument body and has a first end extending beyond the staple-containing casing. An anvil, of improved configuration for easier removal from the anastomotic site, is removably mounted by means of an anvil nut on the first end of the adjusting rod facing the staple-containing casing. By means of an adjustment knob at the free end of the instrument body handle portion, the anvil and the adjusting rod are shiftable axially of the instrument body between a position wherein the anvil is adjacent the staple-containing casing and a position wherein the anvil is spaced from the staple-containing casing. The anvil has a plurality of anvil pockets formed therein to clinch the staples over a range of distances between the anvil and the staple casing constituting a working gap. The adjustment rod has a second end mounting an indicator cooperating with the adjustment knob to give both visual and tactile indications that the anvil is spaced from the staple casing within the operating gap. A ring scale is mounted on the adjusting knob enabling accurate setting of the distance between the anvil and the staple casing, within the working gap, according to the thickness of the tissue of the tubular body organs being joined. The instrument is also provided with a lever actuated staple driver and scalpel assembly and a slide safety lockout to prevent undesired actuation of the lever.

    • A control module advantageously reduces cost and enhances reliability, design flexibility, ease of assembly, and performance of a flywheel operated hand tool. The control module includes a thin film printed circuit with non-contact speed sensing of a flywheel to more accurately set the target speed and control transfer kinetic energy thereof to a fastener, achieving a desired depth regardless of variations in component performance and battery voltage. The printed circuit also includes long service life thin film switches for responding to trigger and safety inputs. Furthermore, the control module responds to a user speed selection and to preset speed selection ranges to reconfigure the controls as appropriate to constraints of a fastener drive assembly and to user preferences.

    • An electronically controlled pneumatic fastener driving tool. The tool is of the type having a body containing a cylinder with a piston/driver assembly therein, a firing valve actuable to introduce high pressure air into the cylinder to cycle the piston/driver assembly, a manual trigger, a safety trip, and an electronic control system. The electronic control system comprises a remote solenoid valve to actuate the firing valve, a microprocessor having inputs from at least the trigger and safety trip and an output to energize the solenoid of the remote valve to cycle the tool, a battery to energize the microprocessor and a rechargeable battery to energize the solenoid of the remote valve. The microprocessor determines the mode of operation of the tool and may be designed to provide two or more modes selectable by a mode selection switch. The input from the trigger is provided with a reed switch closable by the trigger and the input from the safety trip is provided with a reed switch closable by the safety trip. The microprocessor may provide a timer to impose a time limit on the trigger, the safety trip, or both. The electronic control system comprises a part of the tool itself. The tool is provided with a generator which partially recharges the solenoid battery during each cycle of the tool.
