    • There is provided an information recording medium and an information reproducing apparatus capable of carrying out information reproduction and tracking control by utilizing near-field light. A data bit 12 of a convex having a section orthogonal to a tracking direction in a triangular shape is formed on an information recording medium 3 as an information unit, by scattering near-field light formed at a reproducing probe 1 at inclined faces of the data bit 12 with directionalities, fluxes of reflected and scattered light thereby are detected by reproduced light detectors 6 and 7 arranged symmetrically in a left and right direction relative to a central axis of the reproducing probe 1 along the tracking direction, a differential signal between the detected signals is outputted by a difference circuit 20 and an actuator 22 is driven by the differential signal via a tracking signal forming circuit 21 and a position of the reproducing probe 1 is controlled to carry out the tracking control.

    • A near field optical head includes a slider 20, a main magnetic pole 32 and an auxiliary magnetic pole 30 and is provided with a recording element 21 fixed on a top end surface of the slider. The near field optical head is provided with a light flux transmission element 22. The light flux transmission element 22 is fixed adjacently to the main magnetic pole and formed from a flat surface 40a and a curved surface 40b into the shape of a half column. The light flux transmission element 22 includes a core 40 for transmitting a light flux L introduced from one end to the other end and a cladding 41 for confining therein the core. The near field optical head includes a metal film 23, which is formed on a curved surface in the vicinity of the other end of the core for generating near filed light R from a light flux to localize the near field light on a field surface between the metal film and the curved surface, and a light flux introducing means 4 for introducing the light flux having a polarization direction adjusted into a straight direction substantially perpendicular to the flat surface from one end into the core. A top end of the main magnetic pole 32 is bent toward the core and embedded in the core while being exposed to the other end.

    • A method of manufacturing a near-field optical head. A first projection shaped in a quadrangular pyramid is formed on a surface of a substrate for providing a near-field optical element of the near-field optical head. A second projection shaped in a frustum of quadrangular pyramid is formed on the surface of the substrate for providing an air bearing surface of the near-field optical head. A metal film is formed on at least one surface of the first projection and the metal film is connected with a resistance meter through a conduction wiring for detecting an electrical resistance of the metal film. The first and second projections and the metal film are polished while the resistance meter detects an electrical resistance of the metal film and until the detected electrical resistance reaches a predetermined value such that a top surface of the first projection has a specified size and becomes flush with a surface of the second projection providing the air bearing surface.
