    • Apparatuses and methods are provided for adaptively updating a target for a recording channel, such as a magnetic recording channel. In some embodiments, a read channel apparatus is provided which includes data path modules and adaptive path modules. The data path modules estimate user information from a recording channel, and the adaptive path modules adaptively update the target taps of the recording channel. The adaptive path modules may use a linearly constrained least-mean square (LC-LMS) algorithm to determine the amount and direction of each tap update, where the linear constraint may be a maximum phase or a mixed phase constraint. The adaptive path modules may operate independently of and be decoupled from the data path modules.

    • In a method for providing an estimate of a head position for a disk drive, a readback signal is filtered. The readback signal includes a first position signal component corresponding to a first position pattern on a disk, and includes a second position signal component corresponding to a second position pattern on the disk. Filtering the readback signal includes using a filter determined based on statistical information regarding a noise component of the readback signal. An estimate of an amplitude of the first position signal component is generated based on the filtered readback signal, and an estimate of an amplitude of the second position signal component is generated based on the filtered readback signal. An estimate of a head position with respect to a track on the disk is generated based on the estimate of the amplitude of the first position signal component and the estimate of the amplitude of the second position signal component.

    • In accordance with the present invention, data may be written and read differently in accordance with their attributes, which may include, inter alia, critical vs. non-critical data, streaming vs. non-streaming media, confidential vs. non-confidential, or read/write speed requirements. A data block to be written may be considered an object, and is examined, and from its attributes one or more memory device operating modes may be determined, such as different numbers of bits per cell, different numbers of error-correction code (ECC) parities per user data block, and encryption vs. lack of encryption. The storage controller then performs the writing process according to the mode(s) of operation determined by the attributes. Multi-level flash memory, in particular, is capable of operating in these various modes, at a trade-off between reliability, speed, endurance on the one hand, and capacity on the other hand.

    • In embodiments, data may be encoded based on a tensor product code by encoding incoming data to produce first codewords, and encoding the first codewords to produce second codewords. The incoming data may be combined with the second codewords to produce messages, which can then be transmitted and/or stored. Decoding a received message may include encoding a data portion to produce an intermediate code, and decoding the intermediate code using a codeword portion of the message to produce a corrected codeword. The data portion may then be decoded using the corrected codeword to recover data from the message.
