    • A disk drive with switchable power levels for the heaters in the sliders is disclosed. The invention includes a switch for the electrical circuit of each heater which selects between two or more voltages to apply to the power control element and the heater with at least a high and a low voltage option. The heater power control circuit dissipates a certain amount of heat as a part of the control process. By having a low voltage option the disk drive can save power and reduce the amount of heat dissipated by the heater control circuit when high power is not required. The programmable switch is controlled by the drive control system. The high power setting can be used during manufacturing testing or otherwise if higher heater power is needed. The low power setting is used for normal operation or to save power.

    • A lift tab for a load/unload type of data storage hard drive and a method of smoothing the lift tab. The method includes the step of striking the lift tab with short duration (e.g. 10-500 nanosecond) energy pulses to melt a thin surface layer of the lift tab. The melted layer flows under surface tension forces, smoothing out bumps and scratches. The melted layer quickly refreezes, forming an exceptionally smooth melted and refrozen spot. Preferably, the melted and refrozen spot is 0.2-10 microns deep. More preferably, the melted and refrozen spot is in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 microns thick. The lift tab can have a large number of melted and refrozen spots. The size of the melted and refrozen spots is practically limited by power available from energy sources such as lasers. Preferably, the melted and refrozen spots are at least several tens of microns in diameter. The present invention includes lift tabs having melted and refrozen spots. Also, the present invention includes head gimbal assemblies and hard drives having lift tabs with melted and refrozen spots.

    • A hard disk drive contains magnetic disks which are accessed by a series of pivotable arms. Each arm has a pair of flexible, cantilevered suspensions and a head gimbal assembly with a magnetic read/write head secured to each suspension. A tab extends from and forms part of the end of each head gimbal assembly. The hard disk drive also has a stationary cam member located near the outer edges of the disks. The cam member has a series of rigid cantilevered fingers with contoured surfaces. Each surface has three spaced-apart detents with a recess located between each adjacent pair of detents. The second recess on each surface has a lubricant-filled reservoir. For the majority of its operation, the drive pivots the arms between an operational range adjacent to the disks, and a park position in the first recess when the drive is not in use. The tabs slide along the support surfaces of the fingers when the arms move to the retracted position. At selected intervals, the support surfaces of the fingers may be lubricated by briefly moving the arms to a lube position with the tabs in the second recess. The small amount of lubricant applied to the tabs is sufficient to relubricate the support surfaces of the fingers as the tabs slide on the fingers for a number of cycles.

    • A wear indicator is incorporated on the slider of a magnetic transducer in a magnetic storage system for in operation on-the-fly detection of the state of wear of the transducer. The wear indicator involves monitoring a change in an electrical property of an electrical circuit structure as the transducer is worn by abrasion against the magnetic disk medium. In one aspect of the present invention, the resistance (or conductance) of the circuit is monitored during disk drive operations. Part of the resistance (conductance) circuit structure is mounted on the slider and it is physically worn along with the wearing of the transducer. A predetermined change in resistance (or conductance) gives an indication of the predetermined wear limit at which the transducer should be replaced prior to its actual failure. In a specific embodiment, the circuit is configured such that an open circuit (infinite resistance or zero conductance) indicates that the wear limit has been reached. In another aspect of the present invention, the capacitance between a probe mounted on the slider and the magnetic disk is monitored during disk drive operations. The capacitance of the circuit changes as the transducer wears. A predetermined change in the capacitance give an indication of the wear limit at which the transducer should be replaced prior to its complete failure.
