    • A connector assembly is provided for efficient flow of liquid into and/or out of a vial, such as a vial containing a lyophilized drug. The connector assembly includes a spike and a stopper sleeve, both slidably mounted in the open top of the vial. The connector assembly includes a stopper affixed to the stopper sleeve and sealingly engaged in the open top of the vial. The stopper is slidably moveable in response to axial movement of the stopper sleeve. Movement of the stopper sleeve relative to the vial will move the stopper into or out of sealing engagement with the vial. The connector assembly further includes a spring for generating a small amount of axial movement of the spike, stopper sleeve and stopper after the stopper has been moved into the opened position in the vial. Movement of the spike, stopper sleeve and stopper generated by the spring will cause a sufficient change in pressure to overcome surface tension and initiate an efficient flow of fluid into or out of the vial.

    • A transfer set for transferring fluid, including drugs, vaccines, medicaments, solutions and the like, between a first container, such as a conventional vial, and a second container, such as a conventional syringe having a unique multipurpose resealable member. The transfer set assembly includes an elastomeric tubular fluid transfer and resealable valve member preferably including an open end mounted on the pierceable closure or stopper of a vial and a generally closed distal end having a longitudinal slit and a piercing member is telescopically received within the fluid transfer valve member having a piercing end opposite the pierceable closure. The fluid transfer valve member is preferably formed of silicone and is surrounded by a generally tubular luer connector member having an open end mounted on the pierceable closure and a distal end having male luer threads. This assembly is enclosed within a cup-shaped closure and the assembly is retained to the first container or vial by a collar preferably secured to the vial by crimping. Upon removal of the cup-shaped closure, fluid communication between the vial and a second container, such as a syringe, is achieved by threading the luer connector of the syringe on the luer threads of the tubular luer connector member, which drives the tip through the slit of the elastomeric fluid transfer valve member against the distal end of the piercing member, driving the piercing end through the pierceable closure. In the preferred embodiment, the piercing member includes a generally longitudinal channel which establishes communication between the vial and the syringe through the tubular fluid transfer valve member.

    • A lockable safety shield assembly for a prefillable syringe is provided. The design of the lockable safety shield assembly enhances pharmaceutical manufacturers' ease of assembling the various components as part of its filling or processing of the prefillable syringes in normal practice, while at the same time minimizes difficulties in mating parts made from different materials. A tube is placed around the outside surface of the syringe barrel and affixed thereto. A collar is provided on the tube adjacent the distal end of the syringe barrel. A safety shield is axially slidable over the tube between a retracted position, wherein the distal end of the piercing element associated with the prefillable syringe is exposed, and an extended position, wherein the safety shield is locked to the collar to protectively cover the distal end of the piercing element. The safety shield includes locking structure configured so that the shield can be easily fitted over the tube. The locking structure includes at least one deflectable arm provided on the body of the shield. The deflectable arm includes a proximal end deflectable towards the interior of the shield. A stop member is provided on the interior of a shield in spaced relation to the proximal end of the deflectable arm. A ring is axially slidable over the shield to deflect the arm towards the interior of the shield to activate the locking structure. The safety shield is slid distally by an end user such that the collar is lockingly retained between the stop member and the proximal end of the deflectable arm. The collar, the stop member, and the deflectable arm may be configured to provide tactile as well as audible indication of locking to the end user.

    • An improved transferset assembly for transferring fluids between a first container, such as a medicament vial and a second container, such as a syringe, which includes an integral polymeric transfer assembly having a tubular collar portion, a radial portion overlying the rim of the first container, an outer tubular portion and an inner tubular portion which is integrally joined to the outer tubular portion by a radial intermediate web portion, a piercing member telescopically received in the inner tubular portion having a piercing end to pierce the closure sealing the open end of the first container and a removable closure which seals the open ends of the outer and inner tubular portions of the transfer assembly. The tubular collar portion, which may be separate from the inner and outer tubular portions, is formed of composite polymer including a relatively soft polymer and a relatively rigid polymer, such that the free end of the collar portion may be deformed radially inwardly or crimped into the neck of the first container, yet sufficiently rigid to retain its shape following deformation and resistant to creep to maintain a seal between the transfer assembly and the first container. The proximate end of the inner tubular portion includes a sharp edge which seals against the closure of the first container. The preferred embodiment of the closure is frangibly connected to the free end of the outer tubular portion of the transfer assembly and provides a biological seal.
