摘要： An optical modulation device includes: a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between a pair of substrates; provision for applying an alternating voltage sufficient to render the ferroelectric liquid crystal turbid; and provision for superposing a DC voltage on the alternating voltage. A portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal rendered turbid through the application of an alternating voltage is selectively caused to have an increased transmittance when superposed with a DC voltage.

For this substrate, the first and second heat generating device are driven at driving frequencies of 4 kHz or more, and the first heat generating device are arranged in parallel in the direction perpendicular to the flow path direction of the liquid flow paths, and at the same time, structured with a plurality of heat generating resistive members electrically connected in series, and the second heat generating device is structured with at least one heat generating resistive member. With the structure thus arranged, this substrate makes it possible not only to stabilize liquid discharges even for the execution of a multi-valued recording, but also, provide the heat generating resistive members and liquid flow paths in higher densities.
