    • An optical recording medium of phase change type with an increased number of overwritable operations and method for preparing such an optical recording medium is provided. In the optical recording medium of phase change type whose rate determining stage in the production has been the initialization of the recording layer, the time required for the production is reduced, and stable recording/reproducing properties are realized from the first overwriting operation. The optical recording medium comprises a transparent substrate and a recording layer on the transparent substrate. In the medium, the recording layer comprises at least one Sb-based thin film and at least one reactive thin film; the Sb-based thin film is in contact with said reactive thin film; the Sb-based thin film has been formed from an Sb-based material containing at least 95 at % of Sb; and the reactive thin film has been formed from an In-Ag-Te-based material mainly comprising In, Ag and Te or In, Ag, Te and Sb; and the reactive thin film contains 0.5 to 10 at % of oxygen. In the formation of the reactive thin film, the sputtering is conducted by introducing an inert gas and oxygen gas into the sputtering chamber.

    • An optical recording medium has a substrate, a first information layer which is provided in a beam incident side of the substrate, and a second information layer which serves as the semi-transparent information layer and is provided in a beam incident side of the first information layer, the second information layer is configured to include: a recording film formed from a phase-change material which is rewritable by means of an optical system in which λ/NA≦650 nm, NA being the numerical aperture of an objective lens, λ being a wavelength of a laser beam; and an interface layer which is provided adjacent to a beam incident side of the recording film, the interface layer is formed from ZnS, SiO2, and Cr2O3, the recording film contains Sb as a main component and Ge as a minor component, and in the optical recording medium, high speed recording to a semi-transparent information layer is achieved without excessively increasing the power of a laser, deteriorating the thermal stability of an amorphous mark, and causing peeling of a film.

    • A method for recording information on an optical recording medium is provided so that it is satisfied that 0.16≦(Lv×Tcool)/(λ/NA)≦0.30 and 0.06≦(Lv×Ttop)/(λ/NA)≦0.14, where λ is a write wavelength of a laser beam used to irradiate the recording layer of a phase-change optical recording medium, NA is a numerical aperture of an objective lens used for irradiation with the laser beam, Lv is a relative speed between the objective lens and the optical recording medium, Tcool is a pulse time of a cooling pulse inserted immediately following a leading write pulse, and Ttop is a leading write pulse time. The method allows for forming a record mark with a good shape and prevents fluctuations at the front edge of the record mark, which would be otherwise caused by the recrystallization of the recording film being held at a high temperature.

    • An endothermic reaction apparatus for converting a raw gas, or a feed gas, into a reaction gas or a produced gas, under the influence of an endothermic reaction catalyst includes a reaction tube having a pair of inner and outer vertical tubular spaces which are separated by a vertical partition wall and communicate with each other at their lower ends. The endothermic reaction catalyst is disposed in the inner and outer tubular spaces to form a continuous catalyst structure. The catalyst structure has an inlet portion for introducing the raw gas into the catalyst structure and an outlet portion for discharging the reaction gas from the catalyst structure. The inlet and outlet portions of the catalyst structure are disposed generally at the same level. A burner is disposed inwardly of the inner tubular space for heating the catalyst structure. The reaction tube is received in a furnace container, and a combustion gas from the burner flows downwardly inwardly of that portion of the inner tubular space containing the catalyst and further flows upwardly outwardly of that portion of the outer tubular space containing the catalyst. A heat-insulating layer is mounted on the partition wall and disposed at least at that portion of the cylindrical partition wall disposed between the inlet and outlet portions of the catalyst structure.
