    • A dual mode communication apparatus using a telephone line as a transmission line includes a telephone unit and a facsimile unit. A control circuit is also provided to connect either one of the telephone and facsimile units to the telephone line. When a call signal is received from a calling station at a remote location, the control circuit causes the telephone line to be temporarily connected to the facsimile unit, and, at the same time, a predetermined message is transmitted to the calling station. The operator at the calling station, in response to this message, either pushes a facsimile transmission start button or makes a verbal response, such as "hello" and, if the operator at the calling station has responded by a verbal response, such a verbal response is played and thus heard by the operator at the called station. Thus, the operator at the called station now picks up the receiver of the telephone and carries out a dialing (or push button) operation, which then causes the telephone unit to be connected to the telephone line while disconnecting the facsimile unit from the telephone line, whereby a telephone communication mode is established.

    • A charge coupled device (CCD) photosensor array (32) continuously performs horizontal scan and feeds out data signals representing horizontal scan lines in such a manner that data signals representing one horizontal scan line are produced during one horizontal scan pulse and fed out during the next horizontal scan pulse. A buffer memory (33) stores at least two scan lines in such a manner that one scan line may be read out for compression while another scan line is being stored. A buffer ready signal is produced when there is sufficient vacant space in the buffer memory (33) to store one scan line and vertical scan is effected in response thereto. The buffer memory (33) is controlled to store only data signals produced during vertical scan to maintain the line scan density constant.

    • A horizontal scan sync signal is generated at every predetermined time interval allowing for a time period necessary for one line of video data to be stored in a RAM. In response to the horizontal scan sync signal, a video signal is transferred in parallel to a shift register inside a solid scanning element. When a microprocessor or CPU has failed to take in video data within a predetermined period of time after the appearance of the horizontal scan sync signal, shift clock pulses are forcibly generated so that a video signal is coupled from the solid scanning element to a binary circuit. The interval between successive horizontal sync signals, in response to which the CPU takes in each line of video data, may be made relatively short to schedule artificial periods in which the CPU does not take in any video data. By utilizing such a specific period, the components of a video signal output of the solid scanning element which appear within a given period can be processed to prepare a threshold value.

    • A thermal recording apparatus for use in a facsimile recording apparatus or the like. Thermal resistors arranged in a thermal recording head are divided into a predetermined number of groups. By group-selection circuits which constitute constant-voltage circuits and which are provided correspondingly to the groups of thermal resistors, the thermal resistors are actuated in a time-divisional manner so as to record image information on a thermosensitive recording paper, whereby each constant voltage circuit with a relatively small capacity is actuated in a time-divisional manner for driving the recording head. Thus, a regulated power supply apparatus with a large capacity is not required, so that the power consumption of the recording apparatus can be reduced and the size thereof can be decreased.

    • A seal structure or a sealing method that seals the housing (case) and allows the signal line to pass through a seal portion of the housing is provided. A recessed level difference is formed on at least one of junction faces of first and second housing units (case units) joined together, and, at a portion including the recessed level difference, a first sealing material (double-faced adhesive sheet), the signal line (flexible cable) or circuit unit, and a second sealing material are held between the first housing unit and the second housing unit. The adhesiveness and flexibility of the first sealing material and the elasticity of the second sealing material allow the signal line or circuit unit to pass through the seal portion while maintaining airtightness.
