    • Link adaptive retransmission techniques are provided for use in connection with wireless communications between a first wireless communication device and a second wireless communication device. The first wireless communication device generates M packet error information values for the transmit session of a packet based on whether an acknowledgment message or a non-acknowledgment message is received from the second wireless communication device for a transmission and for previously sent transmissions even if less than M transmissions are sent by the first wireless communication device to the second wireless communication device upon completion of the transmit session. The first wireless communication device computes a retransmission fading margin based on the M packet error information values, from which an effective carrier-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is derived for selection of a modulation scheme.

    • An offset direct conversion receiver apparatus and corresponding receiving method are provided. A received wireless signal is directly downconverted and demodulated to a baseband offset frequency that is offset from zero frequency to produce an in-phase (I) baseband offset signal centered at the baseband offset frequency and a quadrature-phase (Q) baseband offset signal centered at the baseband offset frequency. The I baseband offset signal and Q baseband offset signal are bandpass filtered to produce an I bandpass signal and a Q bandpass signal, respectively. The I bandpass signal and the Q bandpass signal are downconverted from the baseband offset frequency to zero frequency to produce an I baseband receive signal and a Q baseband receive signal. A technique and logic are also provided to select the best baseband offset frequency used in an offset direct conversion receiver.

    • A system and method are provided for improving the performance of a beamforming antenna array in a wireless communications system. A predetermined number of spatial signatures are observed for a communications channel between a base station and a mobile terminal during a predetermined time period. One or more test spatial signatures are generated based on statistical analysis of the observed predetermined number of spatial signatures. A beamforming weight is derived based on the generated test spatial signatures for beamforming by an antenna subsystem of the base station.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for transmitting data streams in a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications system. The method comprises receiving a plurality of signals by a first mobile station, the plurality of signals being transmitted from antennas on a second mobile station, computing a plurality of beamforming weighting vectors from the received plurality of signals, calculating a pre-coding parameter matrix for a beamformed MIMO channel between the first and second mobile stations using the plurality of beamforming weighting vectors and the plurality of signals, determining a normalized transmitting power distribution for data streams transmitted via the beamformed MIMO channel, allocating transmitting power to the beamformed MIMO channel, wherein the data streams are transmitted via the beamformed MIMO channel having an optimized transmitting power distribution.

    • Techniques are provided herein to generate beamforming weight vectors for transmissions to be made from a first wireless communication device, e.g., a base station, to a second wireless communication device, e.g., a client device. The first device has a plurality of antennas and receives uplink transmissions from the second device, each uplink transmission comprising a group of frequency subcarriers. The first device computes channel information from the received uplink transmission and computes one or more trigonometric waveforms determined to approximate the channel information. One or more downlink beamforming weight vectors are computed at any given frequency subcarrier (thus in any frequency subband) by interpolation using the one or more trigonometric waveforms.
