    • A launch monitor that includes substantially all of its functional components on or within a housing is disclosed. In one embodiment, the launch monitor is capable of being transported and used in any desired location. One or more camera's, flashes, and triggers may be used to acquire images of a golf club and golf ball. The launch monitor is preferably capable of receiving and transmitting data over a wireless network. Acquired images and other data may be analyzed by a processor, and then displayed using an LED, LCD or other type of display or printer. The launch monitor may “recognize” a plurality of golf clubs and golf balls based on an optical fingerprint. The optical fingerprints, which are preferably stored in a memory, allow the launch monitor to identify a golf club and/or ball substantially soon after they are placed in the field of view of the monitor Optical fingerprinting enables automatic record keeping, and storing performance data and equipment used simultaneously. This feature eliminates tedious record keeping, eliminates data entry errors, and enables rapid equipment optimization.

    • The multiple dimpled golf ball has 78% or more of its surface covered with dimples. For a golf ball with a total of 324 (332) dimples, 124 (132) dimples have a diameter of 0.157 inches and 200 dimples have a diameter of 0.17 inches. For a golf ball with a total of 384 (392) dimples, there are two configurations: (a) 144 (152) dimples have a diameter of 0.14 inches and 240 dimples have a diameter of 0.16 inches; or (b) 66 (72) dimples have a diameter of 0.13 inches and 318 (320) dimples have a diameter of 0.16 inches. For a golf ball with a total of 414 (422) dimples, 144 (152) dimples have a diameter of 0.14 inches and 270 dimples have a diameter of 0.15 inches. For a golf ball with a total of 484 (492) dimples, there are two configurations: (a) 174 (182) dimples have a diameter of 0.13 inches and 310 dimples have a diameter of 0.14 inches; or (b) 170 (178) dimples have a diameter of 0.13 inches, 260 dimples have a diameter of 0.14 inches, and 50 dimples have a diameter of 0.15 inches. For a golf ball having 320 triangular dimples, equilateral, isosceles and triangles with unequal sides are employed.

    • A golf ball with improved distance is disclosed. The golf ball has a relatively low spin velocity coupled with a particular dimple number, diameter, depth and arrangement. The ball is characterized by a lower flight trajectory and longer total distance. The golf ball has 384 dimples .+-.3% and the dimples preferably have an average diameter of 0.145-0.155 inches and an average depth of 0.0103-0.0123 inches. The golf ball core can be either thread wound or solid. The cover can be transpolyisoprene or an ionomer.The materials of the core and cover are selected so that the golf ball has a spin velocity below 2900 rpm when hit at 230 feet per second by an implement having a face angle of 13.degree. with respect to the vertical. The dimples are substantially evenly spaced over the surface of the golf ball, and the dimple depth, diameter and number are interrelated according to the following formula:[554.3(d-x)-37(D-y].sup.2 +[138.6(D-y)+926(d-x)].sup.2=Swherein:d=average dimple depthD=average dimple diameterx=0.275-0.0041667Ny=0.2790-0.033NN=the exact number of dimples divided by 100 S.gtoreq.O.ltoreq.1.

    • A golf ball having dimples covering its surface and having six great circular paths on the surface of the golf ball where none of the paths intersect a dimple is disclosed. The six great circular paths are obtained by inscribing a cubical pattern in the surface of the golf ball, dividing each square face of the cube into four isosceles triangles by bisecting the square face twice and filling each triangle so produced with dimples. A total of twenty-four triangles are obtained on the surface of the golf ball. Golf balls having six great circles and having 360, 384, 408, and 432 dimples are disclosed.
