    • A lens surface of a collimating lens closer to a light source is in contact with a retracted surface at one end surface of a barrel. On a projecting surface at an outer side of the one end surface of the barrel, grooves are formed at a plurality of positions symmetric with respect to an optical axis. An adhesive deposited in the grooves is applied to an outer circumferential surface of the collimating lens to fix the collimating lens in the barrel. Since the grooves are formed to be shallower than the retracted surface, the adhesive does not intrude onto the retracted surface. The barrel is pressed against a wall surface formed in an inner circumferential surface of a barrel holder main portion and having a V-shaped cross section by a leaf spring, thereby being held at a specified position in the barrel holder main portion. An amount of change in distance from a reference surface to a held position of the collimating lens per unit temperature is set to conform to a sum of an amount of change in movement of the light source from the reference position per unit temperature and an amount of change of back focus of the collimating lens per unit temperature.

    • An optical disk device is provided with an optical pickup that includes a convergent optical system having an objective lens for converging a light beam emitted from the laser light source to form a microspot on an optical disk and an aberration correcting optical system for controlling a spherical aberration of the convergent optical system, and performs information recording or reproduction with respect to a multi-layer optical disk having at least a first recording layer and a second recording layer. In the optical disk device, an operation of changing a correction quantity of the spherical aberration from a value adequate for the first recording layer to a predetermined value is started before an operation of moving a focus position of the microspot from the first layer to the second layer is completed. This allows a focus control to be performed stably with respect to the second recording layer in a state in which the spherical aberration correction already has been carried out, thereby preventing the focus control from failing due to an unsuccessful interlayer jump.

    • An optical head with excellent optical characteristics even when using a light source that substantially has a wavelength broadening is provided. The optical head includes a light source, an objective lens for focusing a light beam emitted from the light source on an information recording medium and a photodetector for detecting the light beam reflected from the information recording medium, wherein defocusing correction means and spherical aberration correction means are provided in an optical path between the light source and the information recording medium. Since both the defocusing correction means and the spherical aberration correction means are provided, while defocusing of a focused spot on the information recording medium caused by a wavelength broadening of the light source and chromatic aberration of the optical system can be corrected, the spherical aberration of the optical system caused by wavelength difference between a design wavelength and an incident wavelength also can be corrected. As a result, excellent optical characteristics can be obtained.

    • An optical disk apparatus includes a photodetector divided into eight segments which receive the laser beam reflected from the optical disk and produce signals based on the laser beam sport thereon. In this apparatus, these eight segments are combined in several patterns for the recorded information reproduction, the tracking error detection, and the focus error detection, respectively. For the recorded information reproduction, eight segments are used as combined in three segment cells RC1, RC2, and RC3 which extend in a direction parallel to each other such that the segment cell RC1 is in center and is sandwitched by other segment cell RC2 and RC3. The segment cells RC1, RC2, and RC3 are located perpendicular to the recording track of the optical disk and produce three signals C, R, and L indicative of the laser beam intensity of the laser beam spot thereon, respectively. Thus obtained signals C is multiplied by a constant K and then added to the other signals R and L. By selecting suitable value as the constant K, the crosstalk component in the reproduced signal can be reduced.
