    • A device for safely removing contaminated needles from syringes without exposing medical personnel to unnecessary health risks. The device requires only one hand to operate; medical personnel simply insert the syringe and press downwardly. The pressure exerted by the user causes disconnect gears to engage the collar of the needle and unscrew the needle from the syringe, at which time the needle falls into a container. The device includes means for forcing needles into the container when the rubber portion of an unscrewed needle gets "trapped" in the disconnect gears, and also includes means for preventing further disengagement of needles when the container cannot safely accommodate additional needles. Also included in the disclosed device is an opening for receiving needles other than the type that can be disconnected by the gears. The container includes a recess for storing a permanent lid, which is applied to the device when the container is full and ready to be disposed.

    • A method and apparatus for the on-line determination of the bonding strength of a plural layer laminate having at least one outer layer transparent to electromagnetic radiation, said method comprising: directing a collimated beam of electromagnetic radiation onto the substantially flat surface of said laminate at an incident angle substantially greater than a normal to the surface of said laminate; measuring the reflected intensity of said electromagnetic radiation at two substantially different diffuse reflectance angles; converting said reflected intensity to an intensity ratio by dividing the greater intensity value by the lesser intensity value to obtain a value which is proportional to the adhesion of the laminate based upon a pre-determined relationship of the bonding strength of said laminate and the value of said intensity ratio.

    • A low cost, compact embossed card reader for reading embossed characters on credit or debit cards and for integration into a combined magnetic character/magnetic stripe terminal. A low-profile housing forms a card path and provides a surface for mounting a removable read head. The housing includes an integrated card guide for guiding the embossed characters along a linear path adjacent the read head. The read head includes a plurality of pins mounted orthogonally to the card, and aligned so as to scan each of the embossed characters in parallel paths as the card moves relative to the read head. The pins move upwardly as they encounter an embossed character and open a normally closed switch formed by a printed circuit board and a plurality of leaf spring fingers. Improved data acquisition and decode methods for sampling the embossed character data and decoding the data to form an account number. The data acquisition method samples the embossed characters at a predetermined rate. The transitions in the data from any of the pins are detected and the raw data is stored. The raw data is filtered or debounced and remaining invalid states are deleted. The remaining data states are used to decode the characters on the card. A first valid state determines whether a second data window is a valid second expected value state. If an expected second value state does not follow a first value state, the method attempts to decode the character backward from its trailing edge.
