    • A method for predicting messaging addresses for an electronic message composed on an electronic device is provided. In accordance with one embodiment, the method comprises: receiving a request to compose an electronic message; automatically filtering the contacts based on filter criteria comprising a type of the electronic message to generate a first list of contacts; displaying a message composition user interface screen on a display screen of the electronic device, the message composition user interface screen including one or more address fields for inputting message recipients; displaying the first list of contacts, the message recipients being selectable from the first list of contacts; and selecting a messaging address in accordance with selection of a contact from the first list of contacts and populating an active address field in the message composition user interface screen with the selected contact.

    • A control circuit can be configured to, in a shared mode of operation, interpret a first touch-based action as a cursor-control instruction while also interpreting a second touch-based action as a multi-touch gesture. Such a device can supplement a native cursor-free user-interface approach with a cursor-based selection-and-movement capability that is also responsive to touch-based interactions. That first touch-based action can comprise simultaneously touching the touch-screen display with two fingers that are spaced only within a predetermined range of each other. In such a case a cursor can be displayed between those two fingers. The user can then move that cursor by moving at least one of those fingers. By another approach the device can effect a cursor-based selection action upon detecting a momentary touch on the touch-screen display.

    • A device, such as a communication device or data processing device, is configured to transition between a locked and unlocked state in response to a detected action that is interpreted as a continuous or single action. In an embodiment a first input is detected at a first input mechanism of the device when the device is locked, then a second input is detected at the second input. If the inputs are determined to be continuous, for example if the second input is detected within a predetermined period after completion of the first input, the device is unlocked. The input may also be combined or interpreted as a password or security code. Conversely, if a detected action is interpreted as a continuous or single action by an unlocked device, the device may enter the locked state in response to the detected action. Methods for implementing this transition between locked and unlocked states are also provided.
