    • A system for retrieving a selected page of a structured document and for automatically developing context information about the selected page. This context information may include a table of contents showing the location of the selected hypertext page in relationship to other hypertext pages. In one embodiment, this context information is inserted into the hypertext page. The so-modified hypertext page may then be transmitted to a remote location for display. Since the context information is automatically developed after retrieval, it need not be manually generated and maintained. For WWW applications, the hypertext page with the context information inserted remains in the HTML format viewable by standard browsers. A powerful and convenient system for browsing through structured documents is thus provided.

    • In one embodiment, the present invention provides a method of selecting a selectable element with a character input device from a list of exically unordered selectable elements on a graphical user interface (GUI). Typically, these selectable elements include hypertext links and GUI buttons on the GUI of computer program executing on a computer system. Each selectable element includes a character portion of data which facilitates selecting the selectable element. The method typically begins the selection process when a user enters one or more characters from a character input device. In response to receiving the characters, the present invention inserts each character into a match string. The match string is then compared with the character portion of each selectable element on the GUI. A selectable element is "armed" when the character portion of a selectable element is found which matches the match string. Arming a selectable element prepares the element for selection and typically involves highlighting, underlining or otherwise distinguishing the hypertext link from other text on a page. The user can then select the armed selectable element by actuating the "enter" key. If a hypertext selectable element is selected then the information associated with a destination node (e.g., a web page) is displayed for the user. Instead of selecting the armed selectable element, the user may search for a different selectable element by entering additional characters and not actuating the "enter" key. The method disclosed provides an improved selection method over prior methods because a user can quickly search and select a selectable element by typing a minimum number of characters.

    • A method and apparatus for allowing a user to select one of a plurality of mutually-exclusive options. A set of visual objects are displayed on the display device of a computer system. Each of the visual objects in the set corresponds to one of the mutually-exclusive options. No more than one of the visual objects is displayed in a selected state. The remainder of the visual objects in the set are displayed in an unselected state. The user selects one of the mutually exclusive options by performing a first action that selects one of the visual objects in the set, and then a second action that selects the option associated with the selected visual object. When the user performs the first action, the selected visual object is displayed in an excited state, and the remainder of the visual objects are displayed in a disappointed state. Thus, the user is provided visual feedback that identifies all of the options that will be affected by the user's selection of the option associated with the selected visual object. In one embodiment, when the user performs the second action, the visual object associated with the selected option is displayed in a selected state, and the remainder of the visual objects in the set are displayed in an unselected state. According to one embodiment, the visual objects are radio buttons, an excited radio button is displayed as a happy face and a disappointed radio button is displayed as a sad face.

    • A large X-Y workspace, such as a table, serves as a support for a viewport flat panel display which moves over the surface of the table. The portion of the viewport display on the table determines the portion of information displayed on the viewport display. When the surface of the table is used as a backlit display, a low resolution image can be projected onto the surface of the table. The viewport display can then show selected information related to the underlying information it covers, such as high resolution views, infrared views and map information. Lifting a viewport off the table surface freezes the portion of the image on the screen. Images on one viewport can be transferred to another viewport.
