    • The present invention provides a novel design for color electrophoretic displays. In the display, each pixel (200) comprises at least two sub-pixels (210, 220, 230), and each sub pixel is fitted with a color filter (211, 221, 231) and contains an electrophoretic media comprising two particle types (201, 202, 203). The color filters (211, 221, 231) in the sub-pixels of each pixel have essentially non-overlapping absorption bands, and together cover essentially all of the wavelengths over which the display is operative. Furthermore, the absorption bands of the particles in each sub-pixel (210, 220, 230) each cover a portion of the wavelengths that is not covered by the filter (211, 221, 231) in the respective sub-pixel. The wavelength bands typically correspond to different colors. Thereby each wavelength band, or color, can be emitted by more than one sub-pixel in each pixel, resulting in increased brightness. According to one particular embodiment, each pixel comprises three sub-pixels having a cyan, magenta, and yellow absorbing filter, respectively.

    • A display device (1) comprises electrophoretic particles (8,9) and an image screen comprising an array of display elements comprising a pixel electrode and a second electrode. The display device comprises control means (15) for supplying drive signals to the electrodes. In operation the image is displayed in subsequent frames. The control means comprise a row driver (16) and a column driver (10). Preset signals (53) are in operation supplied to the display elements whereby the preset signals applied to display elements alter between subsequent frames. The control means are arranged to change preset-signals between frames in a column-to-column scheme. The means for supplying preset signals are arranged such that for the preset signals to at least a part of the image screen comprising a group of columns and rows only one set of data is transferred for the preset signals for said group.

    • In the invention, e-book information is distributed on un-cartridged small media that can be made cheaply enough for use in free distribution of information. The e-book information is encoded and stored on a read-only optical disc that is 2 to 4 cm in diameter and 0.6 to 1.2 mm thick, the information being encoded with sufficient redundancy and sufficient tolerance for missing information that the disc can be conveniently handled and pocketed without losing reliability of information access. The disc has a lead-in area that is prior to all the e-book information and that contains a disc navigation area, and a lead-out area that follows all the e-book information. The disc may include multiple partitions, each partition containing sufficient access information for independent access of the e-book information within the partition without accessing any other partition. Alternatively, the disc may include multiple slots for files and that are equally spaced. For example, to provide data redundancy, at least some of the partitions are duplicate partitions that contain all the same data as another duplicate partition, and the disc navigation area contains partition descriptors that indicate all the partitions and the areas allocated to each of the partitions, and the disc also includes duplicates of the partition descriptors, the duplicate partition descriptors being stored in the lead-in area or in the lead-out area to provide redundancy of navigation information.
