    • Mobile client based wireless communication is enhanced by using geographical position information of a respective mobile client relative to one or more communication dead zones. When a mobile client is approaching a dead zone, data communications can be delayed until the dead zone is traversed, or given a higher priority to expedite transmission completion before dead zone entry. A mobile client communicates its position information to the base station, where this position information can be compared with the locations of respective dead zones. The base station can determine and communicate to a mobile unit, an estimated time before the mobile unit will enter a dead zone. The mobile unit can use this information to determine whether sufficient time remains before entering the dead zone to transmit one or more blocks of data, for instance.

    • A system and method for operating a motor vehicle based data processing system having at least one rotating magnetic disk drive data storage device are disclosed. Sequential presentation data stored on a rotating magnetic disk drive installed in a motor vehicle or automobile is buffered and the context is saved in sufficient amount to transcend a time interval of data unavailability when a disk drive is initially powered up. When the vehicle is shut off and the drive is powered down, the data to be presented in the immediate future is saved in a non-volatile buffer. The amount of data saved in the buffer is sufficient to span the time interval that it takes the disk drive to power up and become data accessible. Preferably, the buffer is a general purpose buffer for use by the vehicle's on-board computer system, the amount of memory allocated to the buffer varying with the present state of the vehicle and disk drive, and other parameters. The disk drive may be used, among other things, for storing and retrieving multimedia data such as digitized music and/or video.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for preemptive head crash avoidance in a direct access storage device (DASD). At least two actuators are provided in the DASD. Each actuator services at least one transducer head. Monitoring for a predicted head crash is performed. Responsive to an identified predicted head crash, a transducer head for the predicted head crash is unloaded and unloading each additional transducer head being serviced by an actuator for the transducer head for the predicted head crash. A data backup process is performed. Responsive to an identified predicted head crash, data are transferred from a disk surface associated with the transducer head for the predicted head crash and transferring data from each disk surface associated with each additional transducer head being serviced by the actuator for the transducer head for the predicted head crash.
