    • Methods and systems for protecting data that is intended for use and processed on video or graphics cards are described. In one embodiment, a video card comprises a graphics processor unit (GPU) for processing data that is to be rendered on a monitor. The GPU comprises encryption and decryption functionality sufficient to encrypt and decrypt data on the video card. Memory is operably associated with the GPU for holding data that is to be or has been processed by the GPU. The memory comprises protected and unprotected portions. A display converter is provided for converting digital data to analog signals for use in rendering the data on the monitor. A memory controller is configured to protect the protected portions of the video memory.

    • In a digital media pipeline, hardware-accelerated transform functions enable longer CPU idle time and a reduction in data transfer between the CPU and hardware, for the primary purpose of conserving power or increasing content security. Multiplexer/de-multiplexer functions can be configured as either stand-alone transform units or as plug-in components to a “pluggable” (host) media source or to a “pluggable” (host) media sink, so that the benefit of hardware acceleration can be applied to the source and sink as well as to the media foundation transform (MFT). Further data processing and control can be routed to a remote processing entity. The disclosed pluggable media source has a single input and one or more outputs; the pluggable media sink has one or more inputs and a single output. The pluggable media source and sink can be configured to accept plug-in components that support a wide range of data formats.

    • Techniques and tools for representing pixel data in a video processing or capture system are described. Described techniques and tools provide efficient color representation for video processing and capture, and provide flexibility for representing colors using different bit precisions and memory layouts. Described techniques and tools include video formats that can be used, for example, in hardware or software for capture, processing, and display purposes. In one aspect, chroma and luma information for a pixel in a video image is represented in a 16-bit fixed-point block of data having an integer and fractional components. Data can be easily converted from one representation to another (e.g., between 16-bit and 10-bit representations). In other aspects, formats for representing 8-, 10- and 16-bit video image data (e.g., packed and hybrid planar formats), and codes for indicating the formats, are described.

    • Systems and methods for interfacing media components are disclosed. Information about the capabilities of digital media components registered with the system is stored in a capabilities register. In addition, a profile register that contains information about specific capabilities required to perform specific tasks is developed. An application that requires digital media services can select one or more profiles representative of the required service from the profile register. The profile can be mapped onto the capabilities register to locate one or more digital media components registered with system capable of performing operations required to provide the digital media services. The components can be instantiated and connected to build a device capable of providing the requested digital media service. Also disclosed is an Application Programming Interface (API) that enables applications to interface with digital media components from disparate third-party vendors.
