    • A female tube connector defining a tapered socket having an open, inner end communicating with the lumen of a tube, and a sealing cap proportioned to close the connector and to seal the tapered socket. The sealing cap comprises a cap body and a tapered projection proportioned to sealingly fit within the tapered socket. The projection is carried by the cap body and extends beyond the cap body by a distance to permit the projection to substantially completely occupy the whole length of the tapered socket when the cap is closing the female connector. The projection has an outer surface that carries an antiseptic material, so that upon such closure the interior of the tube connector can be sterilized between uses.

    • A hemodialysis system includes the following: a dialysate handling unit for providing dialysate to the patient. This unit includes a hemodialysis solution pump and apparatus for monitoring hemodialysis solution safety such as a conductivity tester. Additionally a solution heater and appropriate conventional controls can be provided, as well as a proportioning system, an ultrafiltration measuring unit, and other known apparatus for handling dialysis solution. A blood handling unit is also provided, which includes a membrane dialyzer and holder, a blood pump, blood flow tubing and safety equipment for monitoring blood flow as it is pumped through the arterial/venous blood conduit set tubing from the patient, through the membrane dialyzer, and back to the patient. A first conduit is present for conveying fresh dialysate from the dialysate handling unit to the blood handling unit (or directly to the membrane dialyzer). A second conduit is provided for conveying spent hemodialysis solution away from the blood handling unit. By this invention, the dialysate handling unit and the blood handling unit are connected by a movable arm and are separate from and movable relative to each other while the hemodialysis is being performed. Significant economic and functional advantages can be achieved.

    • A medical needle protector sheath having slotted sidewalls to receive a winged needle. The sidewalls define at least one catch projection and preferably one in each sidewall, spaced from closed ends of the slots in the sidewalls, to prevent needle wings occupying the sheath adjacent the closed ends from easily sliding away. The catch projection defines an elongated member having a first end that defines a wing catching tip extending into one of the slots. The elongated member is attached to the sidewall only at an elongated member end that is opposed to the first end. This permits the elongated member to flex in the sidewall plane, providing improved receipt and retention of the needle wings. Also, a protector sheath end wall may be provided that causes a needle and hub to be held in the sheath in an acute angle to the top wall, with the needle tip positioned against the underside of the top wall, a front, upstanding handle may be provided to the protector sheath which is flexible and preferably of substantial C-shape.

    • A plastic blood chamber comprises a chamber-defining wall having a first blood inlet port adjacent to the end of the chamber and a blood outlet port adjacent typically the opposed end of the chamber. The inlet port is positioned in separate, lateral relation with the chamber, and has a conduit extending longitudinally of the chamber from the inlet port toward a central chamber portion in such separate, lateral relation to the chamber. The conduit curves into communication with the chamber in a transverse direction at an inlet position in the central chamber portion. A second portion of the chamber which is laterally opposed to the inlet position of the conduit defines a sloping shoulder to turn lateral blood flow from the conduit gently upwardly to define a gentle, circulatory flow of blood in an upper portion of the chamber. The chamber upper portion has a wall that carries projections to create blood flow eddys that slow the upward motion of bubbles present.
