    • The present invention provides an automatic restoration architecture for packet telephony applications. Each communication endpoint has access to a pair of edge routers, which interface with a core network through which communication paths are established. The communication paths effectively provide for the delivery of packets between a first edge router for a first endpoint and a first edge router for a second endpoint. When a communication session is established, a communication path is set up between the first edge router for the first endpoint and the first edge router for the second endpoint. Upon detecting a failure along the communication path, an attempt to restore the communication path between the first edge routers may be provided. If such restoration is not effective, an alternate communication path may be established with a second edge router for either of the first or second endpoints.

    • The present invention allows a user to establish a customized call waiting rule set to control whether call waiting alerts and associated caller identification information are provided to the user in association with an incoming call. Based on the call waiting rule set, the call waiting alert may be blocked or provided to the user when an incoming call for the user is detected. The decision to provide the call waiting alert may be based on the calling party, the type of call, the party with whom the user is engaged in an active call, whether the user previously called or received a call from the calling party, the relative priority or urgency of the incoming call, or a combination thereof.

    • A search server is provided to conduct a search in response to a web request received from a computing terminal and deliver a web page, including any search results, back to the computing terminal in response to the web request. Telecom data obtained by the search server is used to access supplemental information, which is used to retrieve the web page information used to generate the web page. The supplemental information may be used to select advertisements for the web page. The search server may also use the supplemental information to modify or further narrow a search query, which was provided in the web request, to obtain search results based on the supplemental information and the search query. The supplemental information may be selected based on telecom data associated with the user or the computing terminal from which the request or search query was received.

    • The present invention effectively delivers SMS messages that are originated or processed by circuit-switched subsystem to a mobile terminal via a multimedia subsystem. A service node, such as a network domain selection server (NeDS), will effectively register as a mobile switching center or like routing entity for the mobile terminal at a home location resource of the mobile terminal. Based on this registration, the home location resource will direct routing entities within the circuit-switched subsystem to send SMS messages intended for the mobile terminal to the NeDS. Upon receipt of a SMS message, the NeDS will extract the message content from the SMS message and create a session control protocol message including the message content from the SMS message. The session control protocol message is then sent toward the mobile terminal via the multimedia subsystem to effect delivery of the content of the SMS message to the mobile terminal.

    • The present invention allows a caller to control how a called party is alerted when a call is presented to the called party. When initiating the call, the caller may select the desired alerting signal to be provided to the called party for the call. The call is routed toward the called party with a specific alerting request identifying the desired alerting signal. When the call is presented to the called party, the alerting signal provided to the called party is based on the specific alerting request. If the caller does not select a specific alerting signal, the call is presented in traditional fashion. The caller may select a desired alerting signal on a call-by-call basis.

    • The present invention allows mobile terminals to initiate calls to either PSTN or non-PSTN addresses through a cellular interface. In operation, the mobile terminal will determine a terminating address to which a call is to be initiated based on user input or selection. The mobile terminal will then determine whether the terminating address should be used to directly initiate a call through the cellular interface. When the terminating address should be used to directly initiate the call, the mobile terminal will directly initiate the call using the terminating address. When the terminating address should not be used to directly initiate the call, the mobile terminal will send the terminating address to a service node. The service node will then initiate an indirect call process using the terminating address to establish the call between an endpoint associated with the terminating address and the cellular interface of the mobile terminal.

    • The present invention allows incoming calls intended for a mobile terminal, which is capable of supporting both local wireless and cellular communications, to be selectively routed to the mobile terminal via local wireless access in a controlled and efficient manner. In particular, the incoming call to the mobile terminal may be intended to be routed to the mobile terminal via cellular access. Upon receipt of the incoming call, a wireless office may operate to forward the call toward a service node along with redirection information. The service node will use the redirection information to determine how to process the incoming call.

    • The present invention provides a network media gateway (NMG) that provides a centralized interface between different types of consumer electronics devices and service providers through one or more disparate networks. The network media gateway may enable a single consumer electronics device to interact with different service providers over different types of networks in order to receive one or more services. The network media gateway may also allow multiple consumer electronics devices, which typically interact with different service providers, to interact with multiple service providers over disparate types of networks. The network media gateway may also allow the consumer electronics devices to interact with one another.
