    • A modulation optical system (40) provides modulation of an incident light beam. A wire grid polarization beamsplitter (240) receives the beam of light (130) and transmits a beam of light having a first polarization, and reflects a beam of light having a second polarization orthogonal to the first polarization. Sub-wavelength wires (250) on the wire grid polarization beamsplitter face a reflective spatial light modulator. The reflective spatial light modulator receives the polarized beam of light and selectively modulates the polarized beam of light to encode data thereon. The reflective spatial light modulator reflects back both the modulated light and the unmodulated light to the wire grid polarization beamsplitter. The wire grid polarization beamsplitter separates the modulated light from the unmodulated light. A compensator (260) is located between the wire grid polarization beamsplitter and the reflective spatial light modulator (210). The compensator conditions the polarization states of the oblique and skew rays of the modulated beam and includes a spatially variant retardance that corrects for a spatially variant retardance of the reflective spatial light modulator.

    • A beamsplitter/staggerer (24) for multi-beam laser printers is disclosed. The multi-beam laser printer is comprised of the beamsplitter/staggerer (24), a spatial light modulator (16) having at least two rows of staggered modulator pixel elements (19), and an illumination system comprised of a laser array (10) and an optical system (13) which provides a narrow line of laser light. The beamsplitter/staggerer is adapted to split the narrow line of laser light into at least two parallel lines of light, and to split each of the parallel lines of light into regions, such that substantially all of the light from the illumination system falls onto each of the modulator pixel elements (19) in each of the rows. In one embodiment, the beamsplitter/staggerer comprises a pattern of reflecting areas (26) and transmitting areas (27) wherein a shape of the regions defined by the beamsplitter/staggerer matches a shape of the modulator pixel elements (19).

    • In an illumination system for a film telecine scanner of the type adapted to provide a line of illumination on the image frames of a film which is supported for movement in a film gate of the scanner, an improved light control system for adjusting the amount of light that is delivered from a light source to an integrating cylinder to take into account fluctuations in intensity of the light source and desired intensity changes in the line of illumination upon a change of scene in the image frames of the film as the film is being scanned. The light control system comprises an aperture defining mechanism, a position servo regulator that maintains the aperture at a desired aperture opening despite disturbances tending to change the aperture between aperture changes, and an intensity servo regulator that takes into account the lamp intensity in resetting the aperture to a new position in response to a commanded light intensity related to a scene change, whereby aperture changes may be effected within the time of scanning a single image frame. The aperture defining mechanism employs first and second movable blades placed at a location in the optical path and movable between a full open aperture position outside the optical path and to one of a plurality of stopped down aperture defining positions interrupting the optical path and the resulting illumination line intensity in the course of scanning a single image frame.

    • A telecine scanner is selectively conformed to evaluate the dye densities characteristic of either negative or print film. The film is interposed in a light path between a light source and a pickup stage that develops a plurality of color output signals from the light passing through the film. Color channel filters included in the pickup stage have spectral passbands in the respective colors that are broad enough to include the spectral dye densities of both negative and print materials. The scanner sensitivity is further limited to a particular film material by inserting an appropriate shaping filter set into the light path, preferably between the light source and the film, for conforming the peak sensitivity of at least one of the passbands to the peak spectral density of the corresponding dye of the particular film material.
