    • To optimize the application hydraulic pressure of the friction application elements in the transmission mechanism, and to reduce the unnecessary load on each member, the transmission mechanism of an automatic transmission is provided with a plurality of friction application elements which are applied simultaneously in order to achieve the designated gear stage, and hydraulic servos which operate the friction application elements independently. The control apparatus has an information detecting means, an input torque calculating means which calculates the input torque of the transmission mechanism on the basis of this information, an application hydraulic pressure calculating means which calculates the necessary application hydraulic pressure required to maintain the application of each individual friction application element on the basis of the input torque, and a supply means which supplies the necessary application hydraulic pressure to the hydraulic servos of the friction application elements. The supply means makes the hydraulic pressure supplied to each hydraulic servo the necessary application hydraulic pressure calculated for each friction application element independently when achieving the designated gear stage.

    • A 5-speed automatic transmission for a vehicle having a highly efficient top gear, a compact construction and a wide overall range of gear ratios. The automatic transmission has a speed changer which provides five gear stages, namely two speeds on the speed decreasing side and two speeds on the speed increasing side with a direct-coupled gear therebetween. The speed changer includes a ring gear connected to an output shaft, a first carrier, a first sun gear, a second carrier connected to the first carrier, a stepped pinion gear supported by these two carriers, and a sun gear meshing with the pinion gear. The first carrier is connected to an input shaft by a clutch and the first sun gear is connected to the input shaft by a clutch. The first sun gear may be stopped by a first brake, a second brake stops the second sun gear and a third brake is provided to stop a third sun gear. Top gear is achieved by meshing of the pinion gear with the second sun gear and the ring gear. Top gear is thus achieved with the equivalent of only one planetary gear set of intermeshing elements and without loss of efficiency. Also, the arrangement of the three planetary gear sets of the transmission is such that one planetary gear set can be easily removed to make a 4-speed transmission derived from the 5-speed transmission of the invention.

    • A control system for an automatic transmission includes a first frictional engagement element and a second frictional engagement element; and a first hydraulic servo for controlling the application/release of the first frictional engagement element and a second hydraulic servo for controlling the application/release of the second frictional engagement element. A regulator valve regulates the oil pressure to the first hydraulic servo. A signal pressure is applied to the regulator valve to establish a predetermined gear stage by switching the applied/released states of the first frictional engagement element and the second frictional engagement element by feeding/releasing oil pressure to/from the first hydraulic servo and the second hydraulic servo. The regulator valve includes a valve member having: a first pressure receiving area to which is applied the feed pressure to the first hydraulic servo as a feedback pressure in a first direction; a second pressure receiving area to which is applied the signal pressure in a second direction opposite the first direction; a fourth pressure receiving area to which is applied the feed pressure to the second hydraulic servo in the first direction, in a shift wherein the first frictional engagement element is released while the second frictional-engagement element is applied; and a third pressure receiving area to which is applied the signal pressure in the second direction, for regulation of the oil pressure only during a shift.
