    • A method includes receiving a detected sequence representing a signal on a channel. The detected sequence includes data bits and one or more error detection code bits. One or more error indications are received for the detected sequence. Each of the one or more error indications identifies one of the data bits of the detected sequence that may have an erroneous value. Errors are detected in the detected sequence based on the error detection code bits in the detected sequence. When errors are detected in the detected sequence, a candidate sequence is generated based on the detected sequence and the one or more error indications.

    • A read channel includes a signal receiver that receives a read back signal and a signal detector to detect symbols in the read back signal. The signal detector includes a first detector that generates raw decisions as a function of the read back signal, a post processor that identifies possible defects in the raw decisions, a selector that independently receives the raw decisions and a list of the possible defects from the first detector and the post processor, respectively, and a decoder that generates final decisions based on the raw decisions and the possible defects identified by the post processor. The decoder performs at least one of Reed-Solomon decoding, Bose Chaudhuri Hocquerghen (BCH) decoding and Hamming Decoding.

    • An error correction system includes an iterative code that employs an interleaved component code and an embedded parity component code. In some embodiments, on the transmission side, input signals received at an input node are encoded based on the interleaved code, which encodes an interleaved version of the input data to produce a first set of codewords. At least a portion of the first set of codewords preferably is divided into a plurality of symbols which are encoded based on the embedded parity code to provide encoded data. Similarly, in some embodiments, on the receiving side, received data are detected to produce detected information and soft outputs. The detected information is decoded based on the embedded parity code to obtain decoded information. The decoded information preferably is used, together with other soft information, by an interleaved decoder to generate reliability metrics for biasing a subsequent decoding iteration.
