摘要： Techniques are provided for indexing XML documents using path subsetting. According to one embodiment, a PATH table created for storing one row for each indexed node of the XML documents using user-defined criteria. The user-defined criteria are used to determine which nodes of XML documents to included in The PATH TABLE. The PATH table row for a node includes (1) information for locating the XML document that contains the node, (2) information that identifies the path of the node, and (3) information that identifies the position of the node within the hierarchical structure of the XML document that contains the node. Use of the user defined criteria is transparent to any query improves DML indexes overhead costs.

摘要： Techniques and systems are disclosed for storing instances of an opaque type in a database according to a direct path loading approach. According to one aspect, an opaque type implementor registers, with a loader application, routines that the opaque type implementor implements. In response, the loader application associates the opaque type with the routines. The loader application reads data that comprises instances of the opaque type. The loader application determines which routines are associated with the opaque type. The loader application invokes the routines, which create an array for storing instances of the opaque type and populate the array with values specified in the data. The loader application converts the array into a data stream that conforms to the format of the database's data blocks. The loader application then streams the data to a database server, which writes the data directly into data blocks in the database.

摘要： Described is a hierarchical index that captures the hierarchical relationship of a hierarchy emulated by a relational database system. The hierarchical index is implemented, using a database table which contains rows that serve as entries of the hierarchical index. Another table has rows that are associated with nodes in the hierarchy. Each entry in the hierarchal index maps to a row that corresponds to a node in the hierarchy. A node in the hierarchy may be a parent node with one or more child nodes. In this case, the corresponding entry in the hierarchical index contains identifiers which identify other entries in the index, where the other entries correspond to rows associated with child nodes of the parent node.

摘要： Populating an XML index is parallelized, providing both inter-document and intra-document parallelism, by using multiple pull-type parser processes to parse respective XML documents in parallel and to call respective ‘instances’ of the function that generates the index entries based on parsed XML node information. The function is configured to operate according to a cursor-type interface model, whereby each function instance can operate on one node at a time in a controlled pull manner rather than in an uncontrolled streaming manner. Hence, the index load procedure flow can be in the control of an application or routine, via the pull parsers, rather than in the control of a serial stream-based parser.

The series of events is generated as an XML document is parsed by a parser, and the received particular event indicates that the parser has encountered a particular part of the XML document. The particular part of the XML document indicated by the particular event is then received. A current validation state for the XML document is determined. The current validation state, which is one of a plurality of validation states for the XML document, indicates a validation type associated with the particular part of the XML document. Based on at least the current validation state, the particular part of the XML document is validated against an XML schema that defines the structure of the XML document.

According to one embodiment, a value index is created for each node of an XML documents as specified by one or more criteria. The criteria are used to determine one or more paths of XML documents. For each path specified, a abridged index is created and maintained. When processing a query in a DBMS that utilizes abridged indexes the abridged indexes are used instead the XML index, provided the abridged index can satisfy the query. Use of the abridged indexes improves the efficiency of XPath queries performance.
