The method includes: receiving a request for an entity or service for admission to the communications network; calculating resources, wherein the step of calculating resources includes: estimating a first future resource use for current entities and services in the communications network; and estimating a second future resource use for the entity or service received in the request; determining admission to the communications network of the received request based at least in part on the step of calculating resources; and using a partitionable booking window, if admission is allowed for the received request, for booking the first and second future resource uses based at least in part on the step of calculating resources.

    • A method and apparatus is provided for assigning resources for an acknowledgement channel, such as the PHICH in LTE systems. Acknowledgement channels for the mobile terminals are assigned to channel groups based on a predetermined assignment criteria. All acknowledgment channels in the same channel group receive acknowledgements on the same downlink resources (e.g., resource elements in OFDM system). A required transmit energy for each channel is determined. If the total required transmit energy for all channels exceeds an available transmit power, the allocated transmit energy for each channel is either scaled down so that the total actual transmit power for all acknowledgment channels is equal to the available transmit power, or some acknowledgment channels are not transmitted.

    • A method and apparatus is provided for assigning resources for an acknowledgement channel, such as the PHICH in LTE systems. A list of acknowledgement channels for a group of scheduled mobile terminals is generated. The list is sorted in descended order of the required transmit energies for the corresponding mobile terminals. The acknowledgement channels are then assigned to channel groups one at a time in sorted order to an available channel group with the lowest cumulative transmit energy. By sorting the channel list before assigning resources, the variance in the transmit energies for different channel groups is reduced. Given enough number of acknowledgement channel groups, the small variance in the transmit energies for different channel groups implies improved error rate performance.

    • Methods and apparatus for performing finger de-spreading and MRC combining are provided. A large antenna buffer is used to buffer all the finger signals of the same user so that the receiver can do both de-spreading and MRC at the same time without buffering the de-spreading finger symbols. For each user, a reference time is introduced to align all the finger signals of the same user in the Antenna Buffer. The reference time delay is used to generate the PN codes for de-spreading, as well as to count the number of symbols in a PCG or a frame. Methods for antenna buffer arrangement, interpolating filter implementation, channel estimation and MRC for traffic data channels, timing for the user's finger signal de-spreading and MRC, long code and short code generation for de-spreading, new finger allocation and finger timing adjustment.

    • A cellular wireless communication system includes base transceiver stations and mobile stations that operate with a closed loop power control. The mobile tracking is performed based on the lock in and lock out thresholds by the base transceiver stations. A forward link power control bit is decoded from the reverse channel. An additional threshold is introduced for determining at the base transceiver station whether the decoded forward link power control bit is valid or invalid. The finger energies obtained from a finger processor formed by a RAKE receiver of the base transceiver station are compared to the additional validation threshold. The additional validation threshold is independent of the tracking thresholds and usually greater than them. The validation performance may not be affected by low signal/noise. The forward link traffic channel gain of the base transceiver station is controlled in response to the invalidity of the decoded forward power control bit. The decoding of the reverse link power control bit and the validity determination of the decoded reverse link power control bit are performed by similar methods to those of the forward link power control bit. With improved validation methods, the forward link and reverse link transmission power is more accurately controlled.
