    • An optical bus system comprising an optical bus is furnished, along two opposed edges, with a plurality of signal light input/output portions for inputting and outputting signal light to and from the bus. Any one of the signal light input/output portions on one edge of the bus inputs signal light thereto and propagates the light to the opposite edge at which another signal light input/output portion outputs the propagated signal light from the bus. The system also comprises a plurality of light emitting/receiving circuits corresponding to the signal light input/output portions. Each light emitting/receiving circuit has a signal light sending unit and a signal light receiving unit. The signal light sending unit generates signal light and sends the generated signal light into the optical bus through the corresponding signal light input/output portion. The signal light receiving unit acquires a received light signal upon receipt of the signal light output by the corresponding signal light input/output portion. At least one of the light receiving/emitting circuits on each edge of the optical bus has a repeating or reflecting part that causes the corresponding signal light sending unit to send out the signal light received by the corresponding signal light receiving unit.

    • A rotary shaft is inserted in a bearing bore of a sleeve with lubricant stored therebetween. Upper and lower groove patterns, spaced in a vertical direction for cooperatively generating a dynamic pressure when the rotary shaft rotates in the bearing bore, are formed on at least one of an outside surface of the rotary shaft and an inside surface of the bearing bore. The rotary shaft has a recessed portion in a region located between the upper and lower groove patterns for storing the lubricant therein. The recessed portion is asymmetrically tapered so that the lubricant stored in the recessed portion is chiefly circulated to the upper groove pattern against a gravity acting thereon when the rotary shaft rotates in the bearing bore, whereby the upper and lower groove patterns are uniformly lubricated.

    • A sputtering device for coating a substrate which enters the device downstream and exits the device upstream. The device includes a vacuum container having a gas exhausting portion; a gas providing portion for providing inactive gas and reactive gas into the vacuum container upstream of the gas exhausting portion; a target provided in the vacuum container between a gas inlet and the gas exhausting portion; a diffusion interval from the target to the gas inlet, the diffusion interval having a length at least as great as the shortest distance between the target and the substrate to be coated; substrate supporting structure for supporting the substrate so that the substrate faces the target; and a plasma producing portion to produce gas plasma near the substrate. The reactive gas uniformly diffuses with the inactive gas within the diffusion interval, is made to be a plasma state, and reacts with sputtering particles scattered from the target to form a uniform film on a surface of the substrate.

    • A transmitting and receiving system includes first and second transmitting and receiving apparatuses. The first transmitting and receiving apparatus includes a generating unit and a transmitting unit. The generating unit generates a packet for transmission by attaching packet identification information to transmission data to which an error detection code is attached, and uses, as the packet identification information, a code that is capable of detecting a 1-bit error caused by transmission of the packet for transmission. The transmitting unit converts the number of bits of the packet for transmission and transmits the converted packet. The second transmitting and receiving apparatus includes a receiving unit and a correcting unit. The receiving unit subjects the transmitted packet to inverse conversion of the number of bits. The correcting unit detects a 1-bit error in the packet identification information of the inverse-converted packet, and corrects the error.

    • A transmitting/receiving system includes a first transmitting/receiving apparatus which includes a first transmitting unit and a first receiving unit, and a second transmitting/receiving apparatus which includes a second receiving unit, a detector, a second generator, and a second transmitting unit. The first transmitting unit transmits data with an error detecting code after a bit-number conversion. The first receiving unit receives a response to the data after a bit-number inverse conversion. The second receiving unit subjects the data to a bit-number inverse conversion. The detector detects an error from the error detecting code. The second generator generates a positive or negative acknowledgement depending on the error detection and uses a code which enables distinguishing between positive and negative acknowledgements when a 1-bit error occurs during transportation. The second transmitting unit transmits the acknowledgement after a bit-number conversion to the first transmitting/receiving apparatus.
