    • The invention disclosed relates to a method of forming composite images or dichromatic copy images free from fog. The method includes the first step of forming on an electrostatic latent image bearing surface electrostatic latent images having at least three different potential levels, the first and second latent images being represented respectively by a first potential and a second potential relative to a common background area potential; the second step of developing the first and second images by first magnetic brush developing means using two kinds of toners at least one of which is magnetic and which are chargeable to polarities opposite to each other, with application to a developing electrode of a bias voltage capable of depositing the magnetic toner on the background potential area, to selectively deposit the two toners on the first and second latent images and to deposit the magnetic toner on the background potential area, while collecting the deposited magnetic toner at least from the background potential area by second magnetic brush developing means; and the third step of transferring the developed images.

    • A toner replenishment control method for a developing material including two kinds of toners triboelectrically chargeable to polarities opposite to each other, which includes the steps of causing the respective toners contained in the developing material to separately adhere to each of first and second surface areas of a detecting member having predetermined potentials, obtaining first and second detecting signals substantially proportional to amounts of the respective toners which have adhered to the first and second surface areas, the first and second detected signals being set to become equal to each other when a mixing ratio of the respective toners in the developing material is set at a standard mixing ratio, relatively comparing the first and second detected signals, and in the presence of a difference therebetween, replenishing either one of the respective toners to the developing material for eliminating the difference.

    • A volume detector for detecting the volume of powdery material in a container includes a roller having a fin and rotatably provided in the container for generating a periodic wavy motion of the powdery material so as to cause at least a portion of the powdery material to rise above and fall below a predetermined level. A level sensor is provided at the predetermined level in the container for producing high and low level signals, respectively, when at least a portion of the powdery material rises above and falls below the predetermined level. The signal produced from the level sensor is applied to a duty cycle detector for detecting the duty cycle of high level signal, thereby the duty cycle representing the volume of the powdery material.

    • A magnetic brush developing apparatus has a developing sleeve made of a nonmagnetic material, a magnetic roller rotatably mounted within the developing sleeve, a magnetic developer supply device to supply developer to the peripheral surface of the developing sleeve, a drive connected to the magnetic roller for rotating the magnetic roller to transport the supplied developer along the peripheral surface of the developing sleeve, and a developer scraping member made of a nonmagnetic material and having a free end engaged with the developing sleeve for scraping developer off the peripheral surface of the developing sleeve and guiding the developer along a guide surface on the scraping member in a direction away from the surface of the developing sleeve. A foreign material separating member made of a magnetic material is disposed within a region which is subject to the magnetic action of the magnetic roller and having an edge spaced from and opposed to the guide surface around which an alternating magnetic field is set up when the magnetic roller is rotated, whereby the alternating magnetic field agitates the developer being guided along the guide surface for separating foreign material from the developer scraped off the peripheral surface of the developing sleeve.

    • The present invention provides a magnetic brush developing apparatus for developing latent electrostatic images with a particulate magnetic developer which comprises:(a) a rotatable non-magnetic developing sleeve,(b) first drive means connected to said sleeve for rotating said developing sleeve in a specified direction,(c) a magnetic roller rotatably disposed within the developing sleeve,(d) second drive means connected to said magnetic roller for rotating the magnetic roller in the same direction as the developing sleeve to transport said magnetic developer along the peripheral surface of the developing sleeve in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the developing sleeve,(e) a brush bristle height adjusting plate member having one end in pressing contact with the peripheral surface of said sleeve and a developer guide surface at an acute angle with respect to a tangent to said sleeve, said tangent extending in the direction of rotation of said sleeve, for scraping developer particles moving in the direction of rotation of said sleeve, from said sleeve and(f) a developer supplying means for supplying developer particles, through said developer guide surface of said brush bristle height adjusting plate member, to the peripheral surface of said sleeve to form bristle thereon; and whereby the length of the magnetic brush bristles formed by application of the developer particles to said sleeve can be controlled by adjusting the relative rate of rotation of said magnetic roller with respect to said sleeve.
