    • The present invention relates to a method for communicating from a primary station with an array of transmit antennas to a secondary station on a downlink channel, said method comprising steps of, at the primary station, (a) configuring the downlink channel, step (a) being subdivided into steps of: 5 (a2) computing a precoding to be applied during a corresponding transmission from the primary station to the secondary station for each of an array of transmit antennas; (a3) applying a reversible transform to the precoding, thus ascertaining a set of precoding coefficients substantially representative of the precoding in a transform 10 domain; (a4) computing a set of parameters comprising at least one parameter, said parameter being substantially representative of the coefficients obtained at step (a3); (a5) signaling the set of parameters to the secondary station; 15 (b) transmitting data to the secondary station substantially according to the precoding computed at step (a2).

    • The invention provides a method for efficiently defining E-RACH resources at least partly with reference to R99 RACH resources. This is achieved such that very little additional signaling is required on the BCH. E-RACH resources may be efficiently defined by signaled or predetermined differences from the R99 RACH resources. Resources for each PRACH are broadcast using the BCH. However, some UEs are configured to use E-RACH, for example by means of higher-layer signaling. In one embodiment, the resources available for each E-RACH for the configured UEs are given by the same set of signatures but the scrambling code and sub-channels are different. In another embodiment, the resources available for each E-RACH for the configured UEs are given by the same set of scrambling codes, but the signatures and sub-channels are different. In a typical, but not exclusive embodiment, the invention is applied in UMTS WCDMA.

    • A secondary station has a receiver capable of resolving signals received as a plurality of multipath signals from a plurality of base stations during a soft handover process. This capability may, for example, be provided by a Rake receiver. In order to decode and act upon the received signals in a very short period of time, signals arriving after a predetermined time are not processed by the receiver which is able instead to process weaker signals which arrived before the time. Such a secondary station is particularly suitable for decoding and acting upon power control commands included in received signals in a UMTS system, for which a very limited period of time is provided by the UMTS specification. The predetermined time may be the time after which signals are received too late for use in determining the next power control change.
