    • An apparatus and corresponding method for deciding whether to perform link adaptation for communication transmitted from a first communication device to a second communication device, where the second communication device examines a signal received from the first communication device and provides a first indication of the quality of the signal. The method includes the steps of: recording at least one first indication of the quality of the signal as received by the second communication device; providing a second indication of the quality of the signal based on the at least one first indication of the quality of the signal; and deciding to perform link adaptation based on the second indication of the quality of the signal. The first indication of the quality of the signal is for example a signal to interference ratio (SIR) estimate. Often, the second indication of the quality of the signal is a changed SIR target value.

    • An alarm module is provided that includes a first and second switch, a power source and a signal module for generating an alarm signal. When the first and second switch are both in the closed position, the signal module is activated by power from the power source. The first switch opens when an item associated with the alarm module is placed on or connected to the alarm module, and closes when the item is tampered with or removed. The second switch opens when a key is inserted into the alarm module, and closes when the key is removed from the alarm module. The alarm module may also include a third switch that closes when power flows from the power source to the device, and can only be opened upon insertion of the key into the alarm module.

    • Diagnostic analyses of medical specimens or analyses of samples taken from industrial processes, waste treatment or the environment are made based on hydraulic dosage of liquids, in which a dosage space (8) of limited volume included in the test unit is filled with the medium needed in the test by means of a liquid actuator, such as a bellows (18), the sample being combined with the medium by absorption into the dosage space with the aid of the actuator, purging a corresponding amount of medium from the space under the effect of suction. If necessary, one or more reactants required in the test are drawn into the dosage space (8) on the same principle. The quantitatively dosed liquids can then be mixed and transferred hydraulically into the incubation and/or detection spaces (25, 26) of the test unit with movements generated by the actuator (18). The system may include data transmission communications.

    • The invention relates to a method for supporting an encoding of an audio signal, wherein a first coder mode and a second coder mode are available for encoding a respective section of an audio signal. The second coder mode enables a coding of a respective section based on a first coding model, which requires for an encoding of a respective section only information from the section itself, and based on a second coding model, which requires for an encoding of a respective section in addition an overlap signal with information from a preceding section. After a switch from the first coder mode to the second coder mode, always the first coding model is used for encoding a first section of the audio signal. This section can then be employed to generate an artificial overlap signal for a subsequent section, which is possibly to be encoded with the second coding model.

    • Management of a low memory treelike data structure is shown. The method according to the invention comprises steps for creating a decision tree including a parent node and at least one leaf node, and steps for searching data from said nodes. The nodes of the decision tree are stored sequentially in such a manner that nodes follow the parent node in storage order, wherein the nodes refining the context of the searchable data can be reached without a link from their parent node. The method can preferably be utilized in speech-recognition systems, in text-to-phoneme mapping.
