摘要： Coatings of metals, metal alloys, metal carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides and phosphides are provided. A precursor having organic ligands bonded to one or more metal atoms, such precursor having the element X also bonded directly or indirectly to the metal or metals, is pyrolyzed on a substrate surface to give a coating of M.sub.a X.sub.b. M represents a transition, lanthanide or actinide metal or tin, X represents C, N, B, Si, or P, and a and b represent the atomic proportions of M and X. The subscript b may be zero if an alloy or pure metal is to be prepared. The product M.sub.a X.sub.b can be prepared by relatively low temperature pyrolysis and the precursor can be used as a solution or a low melting solid.

摘要： By the inventive method, an amorphous material in powder form can be produced, whereby at least two starting components in powder form are mechanically alloyed by means of a milling process so that a boron component which cannot be alloyed mechanically can nevertheless be alloyed. According to the invention, a boron component in powder form is admixed to the starting components; this powder mixture is subjected to the milling process, an amorphous alloying component being formed from the starting components with embedded or deposited fine particles of the boron components; and the mixture powder so produced is subjected to an annealing treatment below the crystallization temperature of the amorphous alloy component for diffusing the boron into the amorphous alloy component.

The product is a useful precursor for production by reaction sintering of refractory composites containing titanium diboride.

摘要： Refractory metal borides, carbides, nitrides and mixtures thereof of the Group IVb, Vb and VIb metals are produced from a glass or microcrystalline gel formed from organo-metallic precursors. Typically TiO.sub.2.B.sub.2 O.sub.3 glass is produced by hydrolysis of titanium butoxide and trimethyl borate, followed by gelling/drying. The glass may have carbon inclusions or may be mixed with carbon or aluminum powder or a mixture thereof, and reacted. In the case of aluminothermic and carboaluminothermic reduction, there is a residual aluminum-containing phase in the product. Composites can also be produced by including inert materials in the reaction mixture.

摘要： A process for preparing ferroboron comprises first heating a mixture of boron oxide or boric acid, iron or iron oxide, carbon, and a carbohydrate to produce a foraminous char. During a subsequent two-stage reduction process in an electric or arc plasma furnace, ferroboron is produced and gaseous boric oxides are evolved. The boron values are captured as they move to the cooler regions of the furnace, resulting in high boron yields. The process is particularly useful in preparing pure and inexpensive raw material for the production of amorphous ferroalloys.

摘要： The preparation of refractory metal borides of Group 4b of the Periodic Table of the Elements by reaction in the vapor phase of the corresponding metal halide, e.g., metal chloride, with a boron source reactant in the presence of hydrogen in a reactor is described. Reactants are introduced into a reactant mixing zone containing hydrogen through reactant inlet assembly means. Refractory metal boride product deposits on the exposed surfaces of the reactant inlet assembly means are reduced significantly by introducing metal halide reactant and substantially anhydrous hydrogen halide into the hydrogen stream upstream of the boron source reactant while introducing boron source reactant mixed with inert carrier gas, e.g., argon, into said hydrogen stream downstream of the metal halide and hydrogen halide streams.
