    • This hydraulically-actuated operating system comprises a cylinder, a piston movable therein in an opening direction to open a circuit breaker, and an accumulator for supplying pressurized liquid to a piston-actuating space within the cylinder. A normally-closed valve between the accumulator and the actuating space is openable to allow pressurized liquid from the accumulator to flow through the valve into the actuating space to drive the piston in an opening direction. A vent is located hydraulically between the actuating space and the valve for affording communication between said actuating space and a low pressure region.Flow control means is provided for restricting leakage through said vent to a rate that prevents said leakage from substantially detracting from the development of pressure within said actuatng space during the period from initial opening of the valve to the time when said piston has moved through most of its opening stroke. Following such period and while the valve is still open, said flow control means allows effective leakage through said vent. The accumulator has a limited capacity that results in the pressure within said actuating space decaying promptly to a low value as a result of effective leakage through said vent after the piston has moved through a circuit-breaker opening stroke and while the valve is in its open state. Means is provided for resetting the valve to its closed state in response to said pressure decay in the actuating space.

    • A switch or circuit breaker that provides a high contact pressure when closed and provides a reduced and automatically regulated contact pressure during opening and closing. In one embodiment a pair of contacts is mounted opposite one another and one of the contacts is carried at one end of a pivotably mounted lever so that it can move towards and away from the other by a movement of the other end of the lever. A fluid operated cylinder arrangement is provided to move the switch blade from a first disengaged position to a second engaged position between the blades. The cylinder is mounted on a mechanical linkage so that the linkage is deflected in accordance with the resistance of the blade to movement, and the deflection of the linkage moves the lever tending to decrease contact pressure. A balance is reached between contact pressure and the blade movement tending to maintain a constant and reduced contact pressure during opening and closing.

The fluid introducing valve means includes a fluid introducing valve disposed in the proximity of the operating piston and adapted to move toward the operating piston when brought to an open position, with its back being exposed to the operating medium at all times. By this arrangement, the device is capable of operating the circuit breaker at high speed even if the circuit breaker is under a high load and it has a large contact parting distance.

    • A fluid actuating device for an electric switching apparatus such as a high-voltage power circuit breaker or the like includes an actuator for actuating the electric switching apparatus. The actuator has an actuator cylinder and a differential piston movable in the cylinder between first and second end-positions corresponding to the open and closed positions respectively of the switching apparatus. The differential piston has two endfaces for receiving fluid pressure force. One of the end-faces has a surface area greater than the other end-face thereof. A reservoir supplies fluid under high pressure to the two end-faces of the piston. A valve is provided for alternately interrupting and passing the fluid from reservoir to the larger area end-face whereby the piston is caused to move from the second end-position to the first end-position when the valve interrupts fluid to the larger area end-face. An opening formed in the actuator cylinder conducts fluid to and from the variable volume chamber conjointly defined by the larger end-face and the cylinder. A damping arrangement reduces the speed of the piston in the course of the movement of the same toward the first end-position and before the first end-position is reached. The damping arrangement includes an ancillary piston projecting from the larger area end-face of the differential piston which is received in the opening for interrupting the flow of fluid passing therethrough from the chamber before the piston reaches the first end-position. This action causes the fluid remaining in the chamber to be conducted away through a bypass whereby the speed of the differential piston is reduced. A second bypass is connected in parallel with the first-mentioned bypass and the valve includes means for controlling the passage of fluid through the second bypass to get fluid to the larger area end-face while the ancillary piston is still in the opening during the first part of a movement of the differential piston to the second end-position from the first end-position.

A disconnect switch is arranged at a gap in the line of the conductor , the gap being defined by mutually adjacent end portions of the conductor. The switch includes a cylinder formed in one of the end portions of the conductor so as to define a cylinder chamber that communicates with the compartments. A piston switching member is slideably mounted in the cylinder and moves to mutually connect and disconnect the end portions of the conductor in response to changes in fluid pressure in the compartments.
