    • A rocker switch assembly and method includes a housing having an interior cavity for locating electronic components and a plunger member movably located during actuation within the interior cavity of the housing. The plunger member is coupled to at least one contact support. The switch assembly further comprises at least one terminal fixed within the housing. The at least one terminal corresponding with the at least one contact that engages or disengages with the terminal during actuation. A lever structure is pivotly coupled to the housing by a fulcrum fixedly attached to the housing. The lever structure comprises a lever having an upper side for receiving an external force and a lower side for engaging a head on the plunger member to generate actuation of the rocker switch during pivotal rotation of the lever.

    • A sealed rocker switch includes a button having a lever. A coil spring coaxial with the lever and enclosing a portion of the lever forces a plunger against an actuator that rocks to place a spring blade in contact with blade contacts to operate the switch. The blade contacts are snapped into the case of the switch to maintain the blade contacts in a desired position, and are potted with a potting compound to make a seal. The actuator may be shaped in one of several ways to provide maintained contact, momentary contact, or a combination of these. A groove in the lever supports an O-ring against the case to seal the switch at the button end.

    • An electrical rotary switch in use with an automatic transmission for detecting the operative position of the transmission and controlling an electric circuit associated with the positions of the transmission. The switch comprises a switch casing composed of a base plate and a cover plate each formed of an electrically insulating material and provided in its interior surface with a plurality of fixed contacts. Supported between the base plate and the cover plate is an actuator which is rotatable about a rotation axis in response to the changing positions of the automatic transmission. The actuator has a coupling end to be interlocked with a control output shaft of the transmission which is provided to rotate in synchronism with changing positions of the transmission. The actuator has first and second opposed faces each confronting the interior surface of each one of the base plate and the cover plate, and carries first and second movable contacts respectively on the first and second faces for electrical conduction between selective ones of the fixed contacts on the individual plates depending upon a particular angular position of the actuator about the rotation axis. Also formed on the switch casing is a terminal assembly comprising a plurality of terminal pins leading from the individual fixed contacts for connection with the external electric circuits. The movable contacts are carried in slots in the actuator. A third moveable contact is used to energize the starter circuit when the park and neutral positions of the transmission are detected.

    • A pivotable shaft supports a plurality of conductor elements. The conductor elements are pivoted into and out of contact with their associated electrical contacts upon rotation of an over center mechanism so as to selectively make or break an electrical connection. The conductor elements are freely rotatable within the shaft so as to minimize the effects of arcing on these members. The pivotable shaft is supported in a housing made of non-conductive material such that the electrical contacts and conductor elements are isolated from the surrounding environment to provide an explosion proof switch.
