    • A system and method for providing a multi-tiered hierarchical transient message store accessed using multiply hashed unique filenames is described. A hierarchical message store is maintained. The hierarchical message store is logically structured with a plurality of storage nodes. Each storage node is dependently linked to one of a plurality of index nodes. Each index node is dependently linked to a root node. An incoming message is intercepted at a network domain boundary and assigning a unique filename. An index hash of the unique filename, corresponding to one such index node, and a storage hash of the unique filename, corresponding to one such storage node, are generated. The message is stored in the hierarchical message store at the one such index node and the one such storage node.

The method includes determining a sensor output noise component, and comparing the output noise component to a historical sensor output noise signature based on at least one of the range of span of the sensor and the process operating conditions. The apparatus includes a computing device including a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor wherein the processor is programmed to execute a software product code segment that includes a comparator, a data historian, an isolator module, and a limit module. The computing device is configured to detect impending failure of a sensor using an output signal noise component of the sensor and wherein the sensor senses a parameter of a process associated with the computing device.

    • A transmission 16 and gearshift communication sub-system that includes a gearshift 90, a transmission and transmission controller 16, and a common data bus 18.     • A system for using a watermark embedded in an audio signal to remotely control a device. Various devices such as toys, computers, and appliances, equipped with an appropriate detector, detect the hidden signals, which can trigger an action, or change a state of the device. The watermarks can be used with a “time gate” device, where detection of the watermark opens a time interval within which a user is allowed to perform an action, such as pressing a button, typing in an answer, turning a key in a lock, etc. To prevent fraudulent activation of a time gate, the time gate device can be configured to react only to watermarks coming from live broadcasts, and not from replays from tapes or other storage devices. In another feature, robustness of the watermark is improved, e.g., for acoustic propagation channels, by shifting the detection time of the watermark based on a measured bit error count of the watermark. Furthermore, the watermark may be inserted before the desired action along with corresponding offset information if the audio signal is not suitable at the time of the action.
