    • A combustion initiation system includes an initiating device for producing, containing and propelling a combustion initiating plasma having an energy density approaching that produced by combustion of the fuel itself, and is suitable for initiating combustion in relatively lean mixtures of various types of fuels. A high voltage power supply delivers electrical energy by a coaxial cable to the initiating device which communicates with a fuel mixture in a combustion area such as the combustion chamber of an ordinary internal combustion engine. The initiating device includes a capacitive portion for storing a large quantity of electrical energy therein derived from the power supply, and an electrode portion integral with the capacitive portion which comprises a pair of concentric, rod shaped electrodes for producing a high energy, umbrella shaped plasma discharge, using the inverse pinch technique. Due to the close proximity between the capacitive and electrode portions of the initating device, rapid energy transfer from the former to the latter creates high magnetic pressures which transform the discharge into a high energy plasma jet which is delivered well into the combustion area.

    • Disclosed herein is a capacitor discharge ignition system adapted for use with an internal combustion engine and comprising a charge capacitor, an ignition coil primary winding, an ignition SCR, and a spark retard circuit connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR. The spark retard circuit comprises a thyristor having an anode-cathode path connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR, an RC delay network including a capacitor and a resistor with a junction therebetween, the network having one end connected to the thyristor anode and having an opposite end connected to the thyristor gate, and a zener diode connected between the thyristor gate and the RC delay network junction for selectively preventing full discharge of the capacitor through the primary winding for a predetermined period of time after the ignition SCR is rendered conductive, thereby allowing for over advancing at mid rpm range and providing for automatic spark retard at higher engine rpm. In one embodiment of the invention a potentiometer replaces the resistor in the RC delay network to allow for further adjustment of ignition spark timing.

    • A high tension generating and distributing device includes a plurality of secondary windings 11, 12, connected to associated ones of the spark plugs of an internal combustion engine, these secondary windings being mounted on a single magnetic frame 1, 2 offering a plurality of flux paths through a low tension primary winding 7 or 8, each of these flux paths being associated with one of the secondary windings 11, 12 and with means, for example in the form of flux gaps 3, 4, 5, 6 or auxiliary windings 213, 214 having associated therewith shunt switches 215, 216, for limiting or cancelling the magnetic flux in some of the flux paths so as to leave one flux path with a higher rate of change of flux than the attenuated rate of change of flux in the other flux paths, thereby selecting the secondary winding associated with the non-attenuated flux path as the one in which the high tension current is to flow. Each secondary winding may be associated with one or more sparking plugs, in which latter case the plugs appropriate to the one secondary winding will be in cylinders whose timing is directly opposed in a four-stroke cycle.

    • A distributorless ignition system has an alternating current power source for providing power to fire the igniters. The alternating current power source is coupled through a capacitor to a plurality of ignition transformers, one transformer for each igniter. Each transformer has an electronic switch in its primary winding circuit initiated by independent logic means for each switch. A timer, driven by the engine, triggers one logic circuit at a time so that only one electronic switch and consequently one igniter is fired at such one time, maintaining the other logic circuits and electronic switches quiescent during such firing. The system has short lengths of high tension wires connecting each ignition transformer secondary winding to its respective igniter. Such system is devoid of any sparking distributor switch and consequently devoid of long lengths of high tension wires connecting the distributor to the igniters, thereby avoiding substantial amounts of electromagnetic radiation emanating from the long lengths of high tension wires. Such system produces high energy that serves to burn substantially all the fuel injected into the engine combustion compartment and consequently reduces contaminents expelled from the exhaust system.

    • A spark ignition engine has a crankshaft speed pulse generator and a plurality of cylinders each cylinder containing a spark plug. Each plug is connectable to a high voltage ignition winding by way of a reed relay. The relays are divided into two groups and, with a periodicity dependent on generator output, a selected relay in each group is closed immediately prior to generation of voltage in the winding and opened when the voltage has been dissipated. Although both plugs connected to the selected relays produce a spark only one of the cylinders contains fuel mixture and, consequently, one one power stroke occurs.

    • A magnetic field, such as produced by a surrounding coil, lowers the breakdown voltage of a gas discharge device in series with a spark plug so that the ignition voltage will preferentially go to that spark plug rather than to others in series with gas discharge devices having no magnetic field. The switching of the field-producing coils of the gas discharge devices in accordance with the firing cycle of an engine may be produced by a transistor switching circuit excited by a simple rotary electric timing device that also times the spark pulses. A gas discharge device for this system is shown having an elongated cup-shaped anode and rodlike cathode, which can also be made to serve as the sealing tube, centered within the anode. Gas discharge devices for this system are shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,951,144 to the same assignee.
