    • A seal and seal shield assembly for rotary drill bits having a journal member comprising a first bearing member, and a rolling cutter with a bore having an open end rotatably mounted thereon comprising a second bearing member. The rolling cutter has a counterbore at the open end defining an annular cavity. The seal and seal shield assembly is compression-loaded in the cavity to retain lubricant in the bit. The seal assembly has a pair of annular rings each with a radially extending wall and an axially extending wall defining an annular seal gland. An elastic spring member compression-loaded in the seal biases the exterior surfaces against the bearing surfaces. A flat malleable annular disc with lubricating properties is positioned at the outer face of the seal assembly and a rigid annular disc is positioned in supporting relation thereto. A second flat malleable annular disc is positioned at the outer face of the rigid disc adjacent to the journal member seal thrust face. The malleable annular disc members deform under pressure and extrude to seal voids at the bearing surfaces and to prevent the entrance of abrasive particulate matter.

    • Sealed bearing rotary cone rock bits that utilize a standard belleville seal oftentimes require that the static side of the seal be secured to a junction formed between a shirttail portion and a journal of a leg of the rock bit. A metal ring on the static side of the belleville seal is secured to the junction between the journal and the shirttail portion of the leg and imposes a load on the inner diameter of an encapsulated belleville spring. By preloading the inner diameter of the belleville spring, the load on the spring continues to increase as the spring is deflected during use. The present invention utilizes an isolated encapsulated belleville spring such that the inner diameter of the belleville spring is not trapped between the metallic ring on the static side of the seal. The result is that as the deflection of the spring is increased under operating conditions, the load reaches a peak value and then begins to decrease. The belleville spring in the isolated state thus can endure large amounts of wear with little or no loss in load or contact pressure.

    • A shaft seal 10 and method, for use, for example with a rotary drill bit in the oil patch industry, including an annular metal ring 12, an annular elastomeric body 14 and a polytetrafluoroethylene liner 16. The seal 10 has an axially inwardly extending lubricant lip 18 and an axially outwardly extending mud lip 20. When the pressure of the lubricant exceeds a particular value for which the seal is designed (for example, in the range of 100-200 psi), the pressure causes the lubricant lip 18 to reverse direction and allow lubricant to be purged and flow axially outwardly past both lips, until its pressure is reduced after which the lubricant lip 18 returns (flips back) to it original position. During purging, the mud lip 20 acts as a restricted opening controlling purging and excluding drilling mud.

    • A sealing system acts as a barrier to the drilling fluid, pulverized cuttings and other materials in the borehole preventing the materials from entering the bearing area of an earth boring bit and retains lubricant inside the bearing area. At least one bearing pin extends from the body of an earth boring bit and a rolling cone cutter is mounted on the bearing pin. A seal assembly is located in the mouth of the cutter between the cutter and the bearing pin. The seal assembly includes an annular rigid ring, an elastomeric ring and a deformable ring means mounted to rotate with said rolling cone cutter. The elastomeric ring is attached to the annular rigid ring. The elastomeric ring has a lip with a wiping surface that contacts the bearing pin. The deformable ring means is connected to the lip and maintains contact between the wiping surface and the bearing pin.

    • A rolling cone cutter earth boring bit is provided with a floating seal for sealing the bearings of the bit from the abrasive materials in the borehole and retaining lubricant within the bearing area. At least one cantilevered bearing pin extends from the arm of the bit. A cutter receiving surface is located on the arm. A first shallow annular groove is located in said cutter receiving surface. A rolling cone cutter is adapted to be rotatably mounted on the bearing pin with said rolling cone cutter having a cone mouth. A second shallow annular groove is located within said cone mouth. Bearing and cutter retaining means are located between the bearing pin and the cone cutter. A first seal unit is positioned around the bearing pin between the cutter receiving surface and the rolling cone cutter. The first seal unit includes a first annular rigid ring positioned around the bearing pin and a first resilient ring located in the first shallow annular groove between the first annular rigid ring and the cutter receiving surface. A second seal unit is positioned around the bearing pin and located within the cone mouth. The second seal unit includes a second annular rigid ring positioned around the bearing pin within the cone mouth and a second resilient ring located in the second shallow annular groove between the second annular rigid ring and the cone mouth. The first and second seal units cooperate when the rolling cone cutter is mounted on the bearing pin so that the first and second resilient rings urge the first and second annular rigid rings into sliding contact as the cone cutter rotates about the bearing pin.
