    • Steam generated within a vaporization chamber (4) by water droplets (16) as they fall onto a base (1) in which is embedded a heating resistor (17) is directed onto fabrics to be ironed through sole-plate orifices (26). When the base temperature is high, a closure member (32) attached to a bimetallic strip (33) is opened, steam flows through an intercalary space (23) between the base and the sole-plate, then escapes through a peripheral gap (25), thus completing heat transfers from base to sole-plate by convection and conduction. In the case of low temperatures, the closure member is placed in the closed position, air is admitted into the intercalary space (23) and forms a shield between sole-plate and base. The base temperature is than sufficient for generation of steam while the sole-plate is at a relatively low temperature which permits ironing of delicate fabrics.

    • A lightweight plastic electrolytic steam iron has a soleplate with steam distributing means therefrom and a casing of electrically non-conducting material forming the walls of an internal water tank coextensive with and extending over the soleplate. Spaced electrodes are supported in the rear of the tank to generate steam from the water therein and an insulated steam conduit extends from the soleplate upwardly into the tank to direct saturated steam from the tank through the steam distributing means to the surface being ironed. To this general combination, an improvement for minimizing condensation of moisture on the soleplate adds a thin chamber disposed between the tank and the soleplate and parallel and coextensive with them to separate the tank and soleplate over substantially their entire facing surfaces. The thin chamber in one version may be sealed to the soleplate casing to form a dead air space between the tank and soleplate and, in another version, may contain a thin layer or blanket of steam between the tank and the soleplate.

    • A steam iron soleplate, generator, and distributor subassembly of a thin soleplate with a coverplate spaced from and supported on the soleplate by spaced peripheral rib means to define a steam distributing passage therebetween. The coverplate is integrally attached to the soleplate by a continuous weld between the ribs and soleplate and steam generating means are provided in the upper surface of the coverplate separate and spaced from the soleplate and ducted below to the steam passage means. A heat generating element forms an integral part of the coverplate for heat transfer to the soleplate through the ribs primarily by conduction. Both the method of assembly and the subassembly itself are disclosed.

    • With this steam iron shoe, drier pressing can be obtained because the steam from the steam iron, passing through perforations in the shoe body, is drier. This shoe applies more heat to the moisture in the steam from the steam iron, to make the steam drier. This is accomplished by making the body of the shoe of a laminated top layer of non-ferrous metal, intermediate layer of cloth treated with high heat resisting material and a bottom layer of TFE Teflon, all similarly perforated. Also the metal layer is increased in thickness to hold more heat for drying the steam.
