    • Iminodiacetonitrile is prepared by a process comprising: (a) forming an aqueous reaction mixture by admixing water, hexamethylenetetramine, formaldehyde, and HCN; and (b) forming iminodiacetonitrile by passing the aqueous reaction mixture through a continuous reaction zone while maintaining the temperature within the continuous reaction zone at 50.degree.-250.degree. C. The resulting iminodiacetonitrile can be recovered or it can be hydrolyzed to form an alkali metal salt of iminodiacetic acid which can be recovered or converted to iminodiacetic acid which can be recovered.In other embodiments: (a) the hexamethylenetetramine solution and the formaldehyde solution can be combined before being admixed with the HCN; or (b) the formaldehyde solution and the HCN can be admixed with a stabilizing acid to form an acid stabilized aqueous solution of formaldehyde and HCN before being admixed with the hexamethylenetetramine solution in the reaction zone in which iminodiacetonitrile is formed.

    • Trimethylenecyclopropane wherein all six hydrogen atoms are symmetrically substituted with cyano, alkoxycarbonyl or carbacyl groups and which are salt-forming can be made by reacting tetrachlorocyclopropene with the appropriate active methylene compound such as malononitrile, acetyl acetone or ethyl cyanoacetate. Using limited amounts of malononitrile and a tertiary amine, a tetracyanodimethylenecyclopropene substituted with a quaternary ammonium group is obtained, which reacts with other active methylene compounds including the above, nitroalkanes, benzoylacetonitrile, benzenesulfonylacetonitrile, and dialkyl sulfones to form unsymmetrical substituted trimethylenecyclopropane. The neutral compounds are useful as organic oxidants. Their radical anion salts are useful as organic conductors and as dyes, and the dianion salts are useful as image formers on transparent films or on opaque substrates.

    • Derivatives of the .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids are dimerized by reaction in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of (a) at least one metal compound of the formula M(X).sub.n wherein M is zinc, aluminum, titanium, vanadium, iron, or cobalt, X is a halide and n is a number equal to the valence of the metal M and (b) at least one nitrogen-containing Lewis Base which is (1) a tertiary monoaryl amine of the formula, ##EQU1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each is an alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group with at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 containing at least two carbon atoms; or (2) a tertiary monobenzyl amine of the formula, ##EQU2## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different and each is an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical; or (3) a tertiary di- or poly-functional amine which contains at least two Lewis Base nitrogen groups which are separated from each other by at least one carbon atom, and are (a) N-disubstituted amino groups wherein each N-substituent is the same or different and is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, benzyl, aryl radical or (b) N-heterocyclic groups containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms; or (4) an N-substituted heterocyclic amine wherein the N-substituent is an alkyl, benzyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical.

    • In a process for hydrodimerizing an olefinic nitrile, amide or ester by electrolyzing an aqueous solution of the olefinic compound, quaternary ammonium or phosphonium ions and an alkali metal phosphate, borate or carbonate in a single-compartment cell, anode corrosion is substantially lessened by use of a cell having an anode consisting essentially of carbon steel. Even at relatively high temperatures and current densities, corrosion of such an anode is surprisingly slow. Even lower rates of corrosion of such an anode are achieved when the electrolyzed solution contains an alkali metal phosphate and an alkali metal borate.
