    • Reel winding apparatus comprises two spaced side-by-side support drums (12, 13) and a pivotal carriage (14) which act to support a roll (11) whilst material (16) is being wound thereonto. A transfer device acts to support a prepared roll core (21) and to deliver the core (21) to the support drums (12, 13) when the roll (11) has reached its requisite size. Pressure loading roller (19) maintains the roll (11) and the roll core (21) respectively in contact with at least one of the support drums (12, 13). In use, material is wound onto roll (11) until the roll (11) has reached its requisite size. The carriage (14) is then pivoted to move the reel (11) out of contact with the upstream drum (12) and the prepared reel core (21) is moved into a ready position above the upstream drum (12). A splicing blade (22) cuts the material (16) being fed to the roll (11) and then the leading edge of the cut web (16) wraps about the prepared core (21) and engages double sided adhesive tape thereon. The carriage (14) pivots further and the full roll (11) is released for unloading. Roll core (21) is moved into engagement with the support drums (12, 13) and a new reel core is readied for introduction. The carriage (14) is returned to its vertical position.

    • A method and an apparatus for winding or rewinding a running web onto the center core shafts of rolls. While the running web is being wound, at a selected speed, onto a first roll which is, disposed in an operating position, a center core shaft of a new, second roll is disposed in a splicing position so that the center core shafts are side by side and adjacent to each other. A fixed drive assembly and a movable drive assembly control the speeds of the first and second rolls, respectively. The first roll has had a determined amount of web wound thereon, the running web is spliced onto the center core shaft of the second roll and thereafter is wound onto the second roll. Thereafter, the second roll is disconnected from the fixed drive assembly and is removed from the operating position. The second roll, with the running web now being wound thereon, is then moved, with the movable drive assembly, from the splicing position to the operation position. Once there, the fixed drive assembly is connected with the second roll, and the movable drive assembly is disconnected from the second roll and moved back adjacent to the splicing position, ready to be connected with the center core shaft of another roll.

    • Product to be removed from winding stations (full rolls from winding-up stations, roll cores from winding-off stations) are deposited by a manipulation/transportation device on a transfer mechanism (20.1) and are transported from there with a manipulation/transportation vehicle (30) to a storage location. Product to be introduced at the winding stations (empty roll cores for the winding-up station, full rolls for the winding-off station) are transported by the same manipulation/transportation vehicle (30) from a storage location to the transfer mechanism and are deposited there and are introduced at the winding station by the manipulation/transportation device. The transfer mechanism (20.1) is designed in such a way that the manipulation/transportation vehicle (30) can deposit the product to be introduced from a single position and can take up the product to be removed. Between the two operations it is merely necessary for the manipulation tool to perform a single translatory movement. A forklift truck is used as the manipulation/transportation vehicle and in each case two rolls are placed on a pallet (40) and in each case two roll cores are stored on a pallet as storage units. Such a storage unit is transported to the transfer mechanism (20.1) being rotated by .+-.90.degree. and deposited there without the pallet (40). The pallet is moved with the forks of the forklift to the product to be removed in the transfer mechanism, is transported away with the latter by said mechanism and the forks are again rotated by .+-.90.degree. and introduced as a storage unit together with the product to be removed.

    • An apparatus for making a plurality of relatively narrow rolls of paper from a relatively wide band of paper has a relatively wide main roller to which is fed strips cut from the wide paper band. A plurality of pairs of support heads are arranged in two rows extending along the main roller with the rows spaced angularly from each other. Each pair of support heads is spaced in the respective row axially from the other support heads of the respective row and each pair of support heads is adapted to engage in an end of a respective roll core about which a respective one of the strips is wound. A drive rotates the main roller and thereby winds the strips up on the respective roll cores. Respective elongated supports extend axially along the main roller adjacent the rows of support heads and can be raised and lowered. A respective blower box at each of the rolls has an upwardly open mouth snugly engageable with the respective roll held in the respective pair of holders. Respective structures carrying the blower boxes on the respective supports can displace them between a use position engaging vertically upward beneath the respective roll and an out-of-use position laterally offset outward from the use position. Air is ejected from the mouths of the blower boxes to at least partially support the respective rolls via respective air cushions on the respective blower boxes.

    • A winding system for winding up a long belt-like material 9 which is fed in a continuous manner, onto a take-up shaft 61. The winding system is provided with a guide belt conveyor for guiding front and rear ends of the belt-like material 9 each up to a predetermined position on the take-up shaft 61, and a dancer roller 18 for applying a certain tension to the belt-like material being wound up onto the take-up shaft. The take-up shaft is mounted on a platform car 60 capable of traveling and it comes into engagement with the winding drive shaft 52 and is thereby rotated. When the platform car 60 is to be changed for another like platform car, the winding drive shaft 52 is retracted in a direction perpendicular to the traveling direction of the platform car to be changed.
