    • A thermal printer including a thermal printer and a thermal head wherein a clearance between the platen and the thermal head is not less than a maximum diameter of one roll of an ink filled ribbon set by a thermal head driving motor. A ribbon cassette is moved to a printing position and, after a printing operation has been completed to another ribbon cassette. A guiding arrangement for positioning the ribbon cassettes in predetermined positions is adapted to be rotatably driven by a ribbon cassette motor and a plate for supplying the ribbon cassette and receiving the ribbon cassetts. The plate is joined to a take-up end portion of the ribbon cassette and the guiding arrangement is adapted to be moved in the forward and rearward direction for supplying the ribbon cassette and receiving the ribbon cassette by a transfer belt which can be moved by a cassette-moving motor. The guiding arrangement is adapted to be changed by withdrawing from the ink ribbon to another ink ribbon by a fixing member which is adapted to be moved by a ribbon cassette motor. A plurality of ribbon cassettes can be selectively used so that an unnecessary feeding of the ink ribbon can be avoided.

    • A ribbon lift-up apparatus for selectively rotating a ribbon cartridge holder to the printing position or the correcting position uses a disc cam provided with various cam grooves for the printing operation and correcting operation, respectively. The disc cam includes a circular first cam groove for continuous printing operation. The first cam groove has a specified radius with the rotation axis of the disc cam as a center thereof. A second cam groove for single type printing operation is provided and a cam follower pin is positioned initially at a home position in this second cam groove. The second cam groove is in communication with the first cam groove. A third cam groove for a correcting operation is also provided. The follower pin will initially be at the home position of the second cam groove and will cross the first cam groove during the correcting operation. The third cam groove has a smaller radius than the specified radius of the first cam groove. A cam auxiliary plate is rotatably and coaxially provided on the disc cam and comprises a guide portion for the intersection between the first and the third cam grooves and a projection extending at least to the home position to ensure the return of the disc cam to the original position.

    • A thermal printer includes a thermal head pressed against a paper sheet on a platen directly or through an ink ribbon, a carrier which holds the thermal head and on which a black or color ink ribbon is detachably mounted, a first detector for generating a color output signal upon detecting that a color ink ribbon cassette is mounted on the carrier, a second detector for generating a "black" signal while detecting a black area of the ink ribbon, and a control circuit for setting a thermal printing mode, a black or a color ink printing mode in accordance with the output signals from the first and second detectors. When the thermal printer is powered, the control circuit sets the color ink printing mode upon detecting that the color output signal is continuously generated from the first detector. When the color output signal is not generated from the first detector, the control circuit moves the thermal head by a given distance upon pressing it against the paper sheet on the platen. In this case, the control circuit sets the black ink or the thermal printing mode in accordance with the output signal from the second detector.

    • The printing and correcting device is applied to a daisywheel printer and comprises a frame supporting a cartridge for a typing ribbon and a correcting ribbon arranged below the typing ribbon. A second electromagnet raises the frame through a greater length of travel in order to position the correcting ribbon in front of the printing point. A rotating electromagnet causes automatic unidirectional advance of the typing ribbon after each character has been printed. The correcting ribbon is wound between two spools and its motion is provided by means of a pawl which engages with a gear wheel for driving the spool only in the case where the path of travel of the frame is greater than that which relates to positioning of the typing ribbon.A paper finger in the form of a sheet of limited thickness is provided with a cut out portion corresponding to the printing point, and with a guide in the form of a leaf spring for guiding the two ribbons adjacently to the typing paper when they are being raised and for preventing unwanted contact by these.

    • A cartridge for a typing ribbon and spools for a correcting ribbon are mounted on a common frame which can tilt about a spindle. In a lowered position of the frame the typing line behind a daisy wheel is visible. The frame is raised by a first stroke to the position shown to dispose the typing ribbon over the typing point on the platen. A longer stroke raises the correcting ribbon to the typing point and this longer stroke also actuates an automatic ratchet wheel and pawl type of feed mechanism for the correcting ribbon. The two strokes of the frame are controlled by a disc comprising two cam tracks with a common part and separate parts having different degrees of eccentricity relative to the common part. The grooved cam tracks are so shaped that a follower pin on an arm depending from the frame enters the radially inner track when the disc is rotated clockwise by a reversible electric motor, thereby to raise the frame by the smaller amount, whereas it enters the radially outer track in the case of anticlockwise rotation. The disc also carries a frontal cam which operates a ribbon feed mechanism for the ribbon in a container of the cartridge.

    • The typewriter has a drive mechanism including a vibrating mechanism and a feeding mechanism for a correction ribbon. The vibrating mechanism has a pair of ribbon vibrators, a cam follower provided to one of the vibrators, an eccentric cam designed to make one complete revolution for each printing operation in response to depression of associated key, and a spring member for resiliently biasing the cam follower toward the peripheral surface of the eccentric cam. The feeding mechanism has a pair of spindles for carrying ribbon spools, a ratchet wheel mounted on one of the spindles and a feed lever connected to the other vibrator. Upon depression of a correction key for setting the ribbon vibrators to be actuatable, followed by depression of an alphanumeric key, the ribbon vibrators are actuated by rotion of the eccentric cam so that the correction ribbon is raised from its inoperative position to its operative position. When the correction ribbon is lowered from its operative position to its inoperative position, the feed lever is actuated in timing with the return stroke of the ribbon vibrators for feeding the correction ribbon a predetermined length.
