    • A method of transmitting paging messages over a paging system configurable to provide coverage over a primary geographic area or region and at least two subregions defined within the primary geographic region. The paging system consists of a plurality of paging transmitters that broadcast paging messages to the primary geographic region. Some of the plurality of paging transmitters are also assigned to broadcast to a particular subregion within the primary geographic area. During primary operation, for part of a predetermined period of time, all of the paging transmitters within the paging system simulcast paging messages to subscribers entitled to coverage over the whole primary geographic region. For a remaining period of broadcast time, each of the paging transmitters assigned to broadcast to a respective subregion broadcast paging messages intended for subscribers entitled only to paging coverage within that particular subregion. Paging transmitters which do not cover any of the subregions are silent during this subregional paging message broadcast phase.

    • A paging system includes a paging terminal that is operable to receive paging signals and transmit them up to a satellite (28) and down through a downlink (312) to stick locations (314), (316), (318), (320) and (322). Each of the sticks (314)-(322) is associated with a given locale (324), (326), (328), (330) and (332). The sticks are operable in a simulcast mode and also in a cellular mode. In the cellular mode, each of the sticks (314)-(322) is operable to receive a separate message that is distinct from the other cells. Pagers (36), having a known location at any of the locales (324)-(332) can then be selectively addressed and data transferred thereto. To prevent interference between adjacent RF locales, adjacent cells are not turned on during transmission to select cells in the cellular mode. These can be turned on at a different time. Orthogonal coding can be utilized such that adjacent cells can be turned on, thus increasing throughput. The paging system operates by providing a primary transmission path and a secondary transmission path. The primary transmission path is operable to transmit only control information. The secondary transmission path is operable to transmit only data. The data is received by a secondary paging receiver and stored in the memory whereas the terminal information is received by a primary paging receiver. Upon receiving control information associated with the stored paging information, the paging information is then transmitted by the paging transmitter.

    • A method of delivering registration reminder messages in a segmented nationwide or other broad area paging system, having multiple service areas, is disclosed. A set of unused capcodes is assigned on a one to one basis as service area codes for each of the service areas. Each service area transmits a set of messages addressed to all service areas except the local service area. Existing paging equipment with alternate capcode memories for storing an alternate address are employed. When a service area code matches the alternate capcode address in the pager, the reminder message is received and displayed. When the user subsequently registers, a command message is transmitted from the local service area commanding the pager to change its alternate capcode to the local service area code. Since no reminder message is addressed to the local service area code is transmitted, receipt of reminder messages then terminates.

    • A method and apparatus for sending paging signals and messages to individuals within a building and accepting responses to the messages. Messages may be initiated by electronic mail, incoming telephone calls, incoming Fax messages, or other sources. Data is sent via radio to a communications unit carried by the individual and displayed visually together with possible responses. Each unit transmits its identity and responses or original messages when desired via coded infrared light (or, in an alternative embodiment, ultrasound) to one or more remote stations located in rooms or along corridors of the building. A remote station relays data to a central station via wire or optical fiber, which tracks the location of units and delivers messages. Communication units are clipped to the clothing of users and can be incorporated into a corporate employee identification badge. The hybrid radio-infrared light approach combines the broad, reliable characteristics of radio communication with the ability of infrared light to allow each unit to be located. This allows highly reliable delivery of messages via an acknowledgement and retransmission protocol, two-way communication with the individual, and capabilities (such as those for transferring incoming telephone calls) that require the location of the individual to be known.
