摘要： A remote repeat message control for a telephone answering system is provided, by which a person may cause his telephone answering system to repeat any message read to him over the telephone line by the system. In order for the user to gain access to and activate his telephone answering system from a remote point to receive the recorded messages, he dials the telephone number of his system and, after the system has answered, and after the announcement has been transmitted to the caller, he transmits a predetermined digital code over the telephone line from a remote control unit. At the end of each message transmitted to the user over the telephone line, a dual tone is transmitted by the telephone answering system to the user. The user can then cause the machine to repeat the previous message by again transmitting the digital code over the telephone line within a predetermined time interval. At the end of the last of the messages the telephone answering system transmits a different number of dual tone signals over the telephone line, and when the user hears these latter tones he can again send the digital code over the line. This latter action causes the message tape of the telephone answering system to return to its origin position, and all previously recorded messages to be erased from the message tape.

摘要： This telephone answering device has facilities for the remote controlled playout of previously recorded incoming messages. In response to receipt of a coded signal, a cam control mechanism positions the message tape drive motor first to rewind the incoming message tape, and then to drive the tape forward for remote playout of the messages. The control mechanism is configured to sense whether the tape drive motor is correctly positioned at the beginning of an answering cycle. If not, the cam control mechanism is actuated quickly to correctly position the tape drive motor. Thus the answering device will operate properly even in the event that the cam control mechanism was left in an improper position during the previous answering or remote playout cycle, for example, as a result of a power interrupt during that cycle.Additionally, circuitry is disclosed for detecting the end-of-rewind of the incoming message tape by monitoring either (a) the audio signal produced by the playback head as the message tape is rewound, or (b) the brush noise of the message tape drive motor. An end-of-rewind signal is produced when the audio signal output or the brush noise terminates upon completion of rewind.

A person may achieve remote control of the system by transmitting a tone of a predetermined frequency over the telephone line for a short time interval. In response to the tone, the telephone answering system automatically rewinds the message tape to its origin position, and then plays back all the accumulated messages recorded in the message tape and causes the recorded messages to be transitted to the calling party over the telephone line. The message tape is stopped after the transmission of the last message by the person sending the tone a second time over the telephone line, and the telephone answering system is thereby again set to its normal telephone answering operational mode.

The apparatus includes an oscillator coupled to an input/output transducer for generating a tone of a predetermined frequency which is coupled via a telephone to the automatic telephone answering apparatus. The tone switches the answering apparatus into a high speed rewind mode wherein the message information is not muted. The message information is recorded in reverse on a magnetic tape in the transcribing apparatus by a tape transport mechanism transporting the tape in a forward direction during a record operation. During playback, the tape transport mechanism transports the tape in the reverse direction so that the reverse recorded message information is played back in an intelligible manner to convey the recorded message information. The transcribing device also includes a tape position indicator for providing a visual indication of the amount of message information transcribed from the automatic telephone answering apparatus as well as a positive indication of the position of the tape relative to the record/playback head of the transcribing device.
