    • One or both end points of the communication and a network controller of a software defined network (SDN) agree on a definition of a traffic flow that varies as a function of time, where communicating end points vary one or more fields of the packet headers at the sender side before sending the flow packets to the network according to an agreed upon procedure with the network controller. The network controller dynamically updates the forwarding tables in forwarding elements such that whenever source node transitions into the next epoch, and thus alter the header fields, a corresponding forwarding rule is already installed onto the forwarding elements along the route of the packet towards the other end point of the communication, referred to as destination node.

    • In an embodiment, a computer-implemented method provides a service on a network. The method includes the following steps: (a) requesting, on a router, executable instructions from a remote server, the executable instructions specifying how the router is to operate to provide a service requested for a user of the network; (b) receiving the instructions; (c) initializing, on the router, a thread to execute the received instructions; (d) determining that a configuration of the router has changed; and (e) when the configuration of the router is determined to have changed, executing, on the initialized thread, the instructions to apply the service in accordance with the change in the router's configuration.

    • Systems and methods facilitate the deployment of software modules from a file server to agents on endpoints. Agents can contact a heartbeat server to receive information about a latest manifest file that identifies the software modules that should be installed on the endpoint. Agents can then determine from the manifest information whether new files need to be downloaded and automatically download them. A scripting engine can be used to allow run-time installation of modules without causing significant downtime of the endpoint. The scripting engine can utilize the agent to report back status and data from the software modules to allow modules to be used with a mobile device management platform.
