    • A correlation system for use in wireless direct sequence spread spectrum systems includes a RF down converter which receives an encoded RF signal and generates therefrom analog in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signal components. These components are digitized and the digitized signals are then passed to each of the high precision correlator circuit and a low precision correlator circuit. The low precision correlator circuit consist of a bank of a plurality of low precision correlators which receive the I and Q signal components as inputs and correlates the same with progressively phase shifted or delay pseudo noise (PN) codes. A low precision correlation circuit locks on to the appropriate PN code phase shift or delay and applies the same as a reference PN code to the high precision correlation circuit for data acquisition and demodulation.

    • A random access channel receiver used in a base station of a CDMA mobile communication system is provided. The receiver is only provided with a single signal decoding part for performing burst reception of control request signals having different off-set timing each other. A synchronizing circuit calculates correlation value at each off-set timing, and a synchronism determining and establishing circuit determines the off-set timing to be used for a synchronizing signal for receiving the signal frame currently arriving by monitoring correlation values of respective off-set timings, and alters the off-set timing for the synchronizing signal to better quality of signal if a plurality of signal frames of different off-set timing are arrived. The signal frame of less quality is discarded, or abandoned its decoding processing.

    • A receiver in a communications system is operated by receiving a radio communications signal transmitted by a station of the communications system and generating a correlation output representing a correlation of the received radio communications signal and a subsequence of a modulation sequence that is selected based on a correlation between the selected subsequence and the modulation sequence. The receiver is then synchronized based on the generated correlation output. The selected subsequence preferably has an optimal out-of-phase correlation with the modulation sequence. According to an aspect of the present invention, the selected subsequence has a minimum out of phase correlation with the modulation sequence in comparison to other subsequences of the modulation sequence. For example, the selected subsequence may have a “minimum maximum” out-of-phase correlation value, a “minimum aggregate” out-of-phase correlation metric, or a combination thereof.

    • A matched filter for use in a radio telephone receiver that receives Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) signals. The matched filter produces precombinations of input values to significantly reduce the number of multiplication and addition operations, compared to conventional matched filters, required to produce a correlation value. This reduced number of required operations, along with a reduced number of delay elements required to despread CDMA signals, significantly reduces the overall power consumption of the matched filter. The use of such a matched filter in a device like a cellular phone, for example, would thus lead to longer battery life.

    • A multi-level correlation technique and apparatus for detecting symbol and data frame synchronization in high noise and multi-path environments, wherein received signals are correlated with known pseudorandom noise (PN) or other known codes at the base level and the base level correlation results are in turn correlated with PN or other known codes at the next higher level, such that the top level of correlation includes all lower levels of encoding in the complete synchronization pattern. In a two level implementation, the base level codes define symbols while the top level code defines the synchronization pattern in terms of the base level symbols. Correlation hardware is minimized while processing gain is maximized for enhancing low signal to noise levels over a long synchronization pattern. Additionally, precise ranging is facilitated because the top level correlation result covers the entire synchronization pattern.
