    • When an instruction to enter information unqualified for programmed reproduction is accepted, an optical disc reproducing apparatus according to the present invention gives a notification indicating that that information cannot be entered in a program. The disc detection unit 204 detects and decides a type of each optical disc, whether or not the disc can be entered in the program, and also detects the largest track number, the system controller 501 directs the disc information memory unit 502 to store the types of optical discs, information about possibility of entry in the program, and the largest track number associated with disc accommodation locations. When entering into the program the contents accepted from the operation keys on the user interface block unit 6, the system controller 501 refers to the disc information memory unit 502, and if it finds that an accepted instruction is requesting an optical disc or a track number which cannot be entered in the program, it outputs a notification indicating that the disc cannot be entered, on the display of the user interface block unit 6.

    • A memory control device capable of controlling data writing into a buffer memory where the data reproduced from a disk recording medium are stored temporarily is disclosed. The control device comprises a signal generation circuit for generating a stable sync detection signal which is obtained at a normal detection timing of a synchronizing signal in response to a sync detection signal generated by detection of the synchronizing signal inserted in the reproduced data per predetermined data unit. The control device further comprises a data writing controller capable of reading out time base information inserted per predetermined data unit in synchronism with the timing of generation of the stable sync detection signal, and also capable of controlling the data writing into the buffer memory on the basis of the time base information thus read. In this structure even when the reproduction state is rendered unsteady to some degree, the data read out from the recording medium can still be written properly into the buffer memory to thereby ensure high fidelity of the reproduced data.

    • A disk stores data groups (GOP) of compressed picture data arranged over sectors. A 1st data indicative of a compression method and a 2nd data indicative of the presence of the GOP are contained in a leading sector. Data D (independent frame) is located at the head of the GOP. The 1st and 2nd data and GOP are aligned in order. The 1st data related to a 2nd GOP is detected after data D of the 1st GOP is reproduced to reproduce data D of the 2nd GOP. Data D arranged by an interval in the GOP are reproduced. In a quick traverse/reverse mode, a 2nd data D next to a 1st data D already reproduced is detected from a position of the GOP corresponding to a value obtained by subtracting/adding a fixed value from/to an integerfold of the interval to reproduce the 2nd data. Data D scattered over sectors of a disk are reproduced. Each sector has a 1st and a 2nd field. The 1st field stores signals not interleaved relative to signals of the 2nd field. A positional data of a leading sector is recorded in the 1st field. The leading sector is located in a 3rd field in which data D is recorded. The positional data is detected to reproduce the data D.

    • A method and apparatus for handling both proprietary and non-proprietary formatted compact discs in the same video playback system. In one embodiment, the audio and video data signals are in a Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) format. Portions of the novel system operate within a high level format independent software library and portions of the novel system operate within a low level software driver of the playback system that receives disc information from a proprietary or non-proprietary disc present to the playback system to be played. The novel system of the present invention includes a disc format determinator for checking the data contained on a disc to see if it includes proprietary information specific to the playback system. In the present invention the proprietary information may be either VideoCD or CD-I disc format information. If a disc presented to the playback system is formatted for a non-proprietary disc format i.e., VideoCD or CD-I, the disc format determination procedure configures the disc in order to enable the playback system to read and playback information contained on such a disc.

    • A record carrier having at least two information volumes recorded thereon. The first volume includes control information for use in searching for information included in that volume. In one embodiment, the first volume further includes a reference to the control information included therein in a predetermined address range, and the second volume includes substitute control information for use in searching for information in the first and second volumes and a reference to the substitute control information. The reference to the substitute control information is accommodated in a recoverable substitute address range. A reading apparatus for such a record carrier transforms a request for access to sectors in the predetermined address range of the first volume into a request for access to sectors in the substitute address range of the second volume. A method and apparatus for recording information on such a record carrier is also disclosed. In other embodiments, the first and second volumes each include a lead-out signal denoting the end of the volume it is included in, and/or the second volume includes additional control information for searching for information included in the second volume (and, possibly, the first volume). If appropriate, the lead-out signal of the second information volume references (indirectly) the additional control information.
